Question:
Anyone have a suggestion about taking Prozac w/o the capsule?
I have taken Prozac for three years as hormone replacement therapy and have not had any complications. However, since my open WLS, I can no longer swallow my daily capsule but must break it open and take the medicine inside. The bitterness is terrible and lasts all day. I have tried applesauce, apple juice, and SF chocolate syrup. Any suggestions? — Nancy M. (posted on August 30, 2002)

I also take prozac and they do make a liquid. My surgeon said I could take
my capsule as soon as I got home from surgery, but like you I was afraid it
would get stuck. So for 2 weeks I took out of capsule and put in
applesauce. You are so right it is bitter and probably the liquid is just
as bitter. You don't say how far postop you are but like I said my surgeon
said to take the capsule whole right away..........For what it is worth,

Hi. I also take Prozac and had an open RNY on 8/14/02 (!). I'm not really
celebrating yet, but looking forward to feeling myself soon! I am taking
liquid Prozac, which tastes sweet and syrupy just like most liquid
medications. In order to get my full dose, I have to take a lot of it, and
it just doesn't sit well... I have not tried taking my capsules apart but
seeing what the posts here say, I think that I am going to try to swallow
my capsules whole. This whole WLS process is hard enough without giving up
my Prozac too. Good luck to all...

Hi Nancy, I don't take Prozac, but I do take Effexor (a different
anti-depressant). They are capsules (rather large, actually) and they had
me swallowing them in the hospital, the day after surgery. I am used to it
now, no problems swallowing them at all. I am 7 months post-op and down 75
lbs. Good luck!

I, too take Prozac (60 mg/day 3 capsules). I am post-op Open VBG and
can't swallow the capsules because of the silastic ring in my pouch. I
take all three capsules and empty them into a bottle of Diet Snapple and
add a packet of splenda and shake it up. It still has a slight bitter
taste, but it is very tolerable. I drink this in the p.m. after dinner or
between lunch and dinner as part of my liquid requirements. Good luck!!!

You take Prozac as HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY??? Seems you need to
straighten THAT out before you consider how to take it! Good luck.

Nancy,
I have taken Prozac for 8 years, and also take HRT.. suprised Prozac works
for you alone! Anyway, Prozac now comes in a generaic form, and it is a
much smaller tablet rather than a capsule. I have started taking it,it
works just as well and is MUCH eaiser to swallow. Try asking your
pharmacist if you can have the generaic version. Your problems will be
solved.
Good luck!

I had the same problem and asked a psychiatrist friend if she had any
ideas-----her experience with elderly people who didn't want to take any
meds really paid off! Empty the contents into SunnyD, regular or
california style are best. Just a half inch in a small glass/cup is enough
to disolve the stuff, cover the taste with the SunnyD's own sickenly sweet
taste, and gulp it down.

The generic Prozac works wonderfully. I have switched to this pill since my
surgery on 7/2/02. It is called Fluoxetine and is generic for Prozac. I
find no difference between my old capsules and these wonderful pills that I
break in two. Good Luck!
