Question:
I am 14 months post-op and have a very bad flatulence problem.

I find it is somewhat embarassing and wonder if it will ever go away. Does everyone have this problem? What do you suggest to lessen it? Thanks.    — Linda K. (posted on May 26, 2002)

Are you using a lot of artificial sweeteners or eating a lot of low fat things in them with fat replacement (WOW chips, etc)? How about diary products? I have problems with both of these. I try to avoid or cut back on the artifical sweetener and fat replacement and use Lactaid tablets when consuming dairy. There is also Beano for the obvious bean and legumes.

I don't have a "major gas problem" but occasionally do get gas if I drink carbonation at all. Do you drink sodas? If so, stopping this may help.

Keep in mind with my response that I am only 2 1/2 weeks post-op, so I haven't really eaten any real food yet. But I have also noticed a severe flatulence problem on some days, and I think I may have found the reason. Three days ago, I ate 4 pieces of sugar-free candy and had some serious gas that night. The next day, I also had 4 pieces of sugar-free candy and had the same problem with gas. Yesterday, I had no candy and no gas. I do remember reading on here just a few days ago that sugar-free candies contain a lot of sugar alcohols, which can cause severe gas in some people. Have you been eating a lot of sugar-free candies or anything else that contains sugar alcohols? That could be the cause if so.

We all go thu this from time to time. It could be a zillion things. Lactose, veggies, milk, but for me...the worst is sugar free stuff...and BEANS!!! ONCE i decided to try (brain gas day) a bit of low cal cho syrup on some sug free ice cream...BIG MISTAKE. The office and I suffered all day. Try and make a note or mental note of what your eating on your worst days...good luck...and hey..ive never smelled a good one!!!! before or after surgery ha

If I get a drop of milk (not cheese nor anything cultured), I am utterly miserable for hours. The other offender is sugar. Small amounts are not enough to make me miserable (tho they are enough to make me fat!), but later in the day, I will pay with, well, being alone in the room! LOL!

Yep, Got to agree with everyone else...it's milk, sugar free products and some fruits that do this to me. I do best if I stay away from sugar of all types, fructose, lactose, dextrose..etc. etc. etc. Best wishes to you (((hugs))) and smiles =)))

I'm almost 7 months out and yes, gas has gotten worse. I told my friend that with all the gas I had this past weekend that I could have farted us back from New York to Ohio!!!

I am just a bit over 8 months post-op RNY, 125cm bypass, and I have identified the stuff that causes me to have gas... what I call "white carbs" -- white flour, especially bread, white sugar, white rice. Brown versions of the same seem to be OK, except bread. Other than that, I have many fewer incidences of flatulence and I attribute that to my much lower fat intake. I like that I can control it with my food choices. I would suggest keeping a food diary so you can identify and eliminate the offenders.
