Question:
Horrible tasting reflux and gas problems at 4 weeks post-op. Any insight?
I asked a similar question last week but I hope to get a few more responses this time around. I had an open RNY April 8th and everything was great until a couple weeks ago when I started waking up at night with horrible tasting saliva like reflux coming up and burning my throat and causing me to run to the bathroom to spit it all up. I've also had gas and upset stomach. I'm on a liquids only diet for another 2 weeks and have only eaten apple sauce, some yogurt, and a bit of broth. Everything else is water, tea, and Crystal Light. My doc and his nurses tell me this is a common problem and it usually works itself out over time. They've got me on Prilosec, Reglan, and Gas-X but I still have the symptoms I've described. Has anyone else gone through this? How long does it last? Any advise, tricks, or suggestions? Thanks! — Robert H. (posted on May 3, 2002)

ANy chance of a staple line disruption? OR do you know how far down the
alimentary side the BP limb was connected? Sometimes, if it's connected too
high, the bile can back up and cause what you're describing. But it takes 1
doc + 1 scope to find out for sure. You might ask for some Carafate (rx)
to get you through the weekend.
