Question:
Having a hard time with water

I am 5 days post-op (lap RNY) and home... I am having a very hard time drinking water. Eating pureed foods is alright, or no-Sugar CIB. But when it comes to water my stomach really hurts, and I "gurgle" a lot. Half of the times I have had water it has come back up. Any thoughts? I do NOT want to go back to the hospital dehydrated!    — kultgirl (posted on April 23, 2002)

Try having your water at room temp. and maybe adding a little bit of juice to it. Veryfine makes Fruit2o and it's really good. It is water with a hint of taste. It will alter the taste a little and you may be able to better handle it. That's what I did. I'm 5 months out now and can drink plain water again with no problems.

Thanks! I had some Fruit-2-O in the fridge, from "before" and it did the trick! Thank goodness for SPLENDA. No gurgling, and it takes wonderful. I can't believe I didn't think of trying it. Now off to the store to get more ;)

What exactly is Fruit-2-0? It sounds like it would be good. Where do you find it?

I had problems with plain water too. From what I understand it has to do with it not being isotonic or something like that. The same reason that plain water may irratate your eyes but a saline solution will not. I found that if I mixed water with some fruit juice 50-50 (I also added a small amount of aloe vera juice) that it didn't bother me. It has gotten better with time. I am now 7 weeks post-op. But I have also found that Sam's choice bottled mineral water (from Walmart or Sam's Club) doesn't bother me as much as plain water. Again, perhaps has to do with being isotonic with the additional added minerals.

I have a hard time with water also. I have to take tiny sips, and I mean tiny. I also have to have my water at room temp. Cold water hurts. I tried that Fruit2-0 and I thought it was way too sweet tasting. I couldn't drink it. I think those artificial sweetners make things too sweet. Try just taking sips that just wet your whistle and see if that helps.

I have been having a hard time with water too. Last night I went and purchase some chipped ice from Sonic for $1.50. Suck on that. You know today my water had not been too bad except for feeling like I am drinking alllll day. THe water is not hurting as bad. I am 2 1/2 weeks post. So maybe this gives you hope to keep plugging along and it will get better. Blessings...patty :)

Someone on here said once that the problem some of us have with water is because it is isotonic. I can't come up with a really good definition of that word, but it has to do with the properties and characteristics of water and how it reacts with your system. That makes sense to me because I can drink any other water-based liquid (tea, coffee, flavored drinks, etc.) with no problems, but pure water makes me burp, gurgle, and cramp up even a year post op. I am guessing when you flavor the water it changes the properties enough to stop whatever it is that wreaks havoc with your system. Try using SF mixes (the tang is REALLY good!) or lemon/lime juice. It goes down lots better for me!

i had my open ryn sept.19th 2002, and for about 3 weeks after i could not drink water cold or tepid, but i sure ate the heck out of ice chips.now i can drink it as long as its cold.they said it was due to the anestetia and that it would eventually change, it did.

I find I have to get up between 4 and 5 a.m. i order to get my water in. If it's too cold I sip slower until it gets room temp and then I do better. I drink 18 oz. before breakfast 27 oz before lunch and then the last 20 oz before 8p.m. because otherwise I'm up every 2-3 hours to pee.

Seems like everyone is a little different where water is concerned. Early on, I couldn't do water unless it was ice cold. Then it changed for a while it had to be room temperature. Now when I'm not feeling great, ice water has a wonderful effect on my pouch. I tried Fruit 2-0 for a while and then discovered AquaCal and I just adore it. The fruit flavors are much stronger and cleaner tasting to me than Fruit 2-0. My favorite flavors are Black Cherry, Lemon Zest and Lime. It also comes in Peach/Mango, Strawberry, and Grape. A company named Meridian Clear makes it.

I am 2 weeks post-op, doing okay with water as long as it is not warm. But I know someone else who could only drink water hot. I have made celestial seasons herbal rasperry tea into ice tea as well as the peach and because it is decaf and tastes great it goes down well cold which is great considering the heat right now. I think as with everything you have to just try different things and figure out what works for you.

I had a difficult time with plain water also. My surgeon said this is sometimes common and suggested I add a little lemon juice to the water. I also drink Propel (flavored bottle water). It tastes great and has 1g carbs and 2gm sugar. I am able to tolerate it just fine.
