Question:
Anyone else get their WLS story in the paper?

Hey my and Jens story with pictures came out today.
http://www.post-gazette.com/healthscience/20020326hoverview1.asp
Has anyone else had this occur and what was it like?
Incidently I called the paper and suggested the story after approaching that lady at my grocery store who was a super MO, using a electric cart, and on oxygen. For those of you who rembered that thread, and many of you were NOT happy that I approached her, this was my attempt to to reach out to needy folks in a better way. — bob-haller (posted on March 26, 2002)

Bob, good article and great way to reach out to others. You two are still just as attractive in your after picture as you were in your before pictures

Hi Bob - GREAT JOB! I was interviewed by The Birmingham News and even had my photo on the front page of the Sunday paper. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't exciting. 6 other wonderful WLS patients participated in the article as well. I also had my story in Health Notes (http://www.easternhealthsystem.com/EHS_Winter_2002.pdf) which is a regional magazine for the hospital where I work as Bariatric Surgery Coordinator. I have to commend you on your desire to share the joy that WLS has given you and Jen. I, too, see people every day that I wish I could approach about WLS but I don't because I know unsolicited weight loss advice is never appreciated. The media attention currently being given to WLS patients is a wonderful way to spread the word. I'm really proud of you and everyone else who works to show obese people there is hope. Keep up the GREAT work!

I was just interviewed to be the "success story" for the Greater Seattle YMCA Summer member's newsletter. I am really excited about this! They are going to include my before and after photos, information about the WLS support group I started, and my exercise program details. :-)

Great article, Bob!! Most people don't understand what happens during the RNY and the paper did a great job explaining it with the help of the doctor. My surgeon's office is having one of the local TV stations follow a WLS patient. I was in for my 3 month check up when they were there. I asked my doctor how come he didn't consider me and he told me they wanted to see someone who hadn't had the surgery yet to follow them through the process. I'm a real advocate for WLS for those who need it and I try to spread the good word about it as much as possible.

Bob the article was great. This couldn't have come at a better time because I am actually scheduled for surgery April 10th with Dr. Schauer. You & your wife look great & are a real inspiration to people who are thinking of WLS. Congratulations on your weight loss & please pray for me on April 10th.

Great story Bob! Also very glad to see recent pics of you and Jen---both of you are looking so good, happy and HEALTHY! What I really liked about the article was that your surgeon wasn't the only one mentioned, so was mine---the other local guy who does the VBGs. I wanted to pass along that his support group sent out e-mails to everyone about the article and that there is a lot of posative support for everyone. My story will be featured in an upcomming issue of Diabetes Interview magazine and hopefully in on their web page, www.diabetesinterview.com too! When they had an article on WLS, its effect on diabetes, and an on-line community last year, I was employed to help with the community. Since I posted about my surgery there, they noticed and were very interested in doing a follow-up.

I haven't been featured, but the Sacramento Bee has been following two Sister-In-Laws in their journey. If you go to WWW.sacbee.com, I am sure you can search for past articles. Your pictures are GREAT!! As for the controversy in approaching MO peple, we over at the PCOS site www.soulcysters.com have the same delimna. I see women everywhere who have symptoms- we are all in such a quandary on what to do about it... Can you give me the link to the previously asked question, Bob?

Hi Bob. Great story and great photos of you and Jen. The articles on the surgery in general and all patients were excellent. I have not had the pleasure of my story being in the paper however, the Birmingham News Sunday edition did attend one of the Saturday support group meetings that we have locally and did a huge spread on the surgery and several people's experiences. It was on 1/2 of the front page and 2 full inside pages. I was stunned. It was also a very well done article. It didn't minimize the negatives/risks but did a very good job of profiling the positives and the improved health aspect. Congrats again to the both of you.
