Hi Andrea,
I was just apporved for surgery by Aetna (took 3 weeks approved after 1st
letter BMI=43). I did not have to put in twice, I only waited for
preapproval on the surgery part, I actually went to see the surgeaon
without even considering that it may not be covered (not so smart in
hindsight) fortunately it was covered. . Good thing too because that 30
minute visit cost over 300 dollars! Wow.

In a sense-yes. You get permission, or a referral to see the doc. Then they
give you approval to have the surgery after the doc submits your case.

I have AETNA and did not have to obtain preapproval for any dr visits but I
am in the process of waiting around for surgery precertification. I've
been waiting for months for everything to fall in place and it will,
hopefully, in the next few weeks! If ever in doubt, just contact AETNA
directly and get everything in writing!

I have Aetna and didn't need approval for surgery in order to see the
surgeon. Only the referral from my PCP. Now I am going through the psych
eval. before Aetna even hears about it. I have heard Aetna is very good in
approving the surgery though.....I'm crossing my fingers!
