Question:
Is tanning at the salon ok?

I have been to the salon for three days now and some people at work asked me if it is ok..then I realized that I wasn't sure. I am three weeks post-op. Does anyone know the answer to this one? Thanks.    — Amy M. (posted on March 13, 2002)

I tanned last summer for my trip to Florida. I just didn't tan my belly. It wasn't like I was going to show it to anybody anyway. I just tanned the parts that were going to be seen.

My sister had a nasty scar on her leg from surgery. The doctor told her that the scar would fade better if she didn't all it to tan for a year. Well, she couldn't handle wearing pants all summer long so she just went ahead and wore shorts and didn't worry about it. The part of the scar that was above her shorts line has all but disappeared but, you guessed it. The part that was exposed to the sun is still very bad looking.<p>I'm going to start tanning soon and plan to just put a towel over my tummy. It's going to be a LONG time before I want anyone seeing it anyways so it can stay white. BUT....this weightloss is starting to make my legs look MARVY!!!! They will look excellent with a tan!!!

Well, now I'm freaked about tanning! I asked my Surgeon at about 1 1/2 - 2 months post-op if I could tan, and he said yes, not to worry. I've been tanning daily since then. I'm now 3 1/2 months post op. I haven't noticed a difference in my scar, it appears to be healing well to me!

I asked the people at the tanning salon about tanning with a scar and they told me not to tan the scar for about a year. They said to just put a towel over it because the sun is definately NOT GOOD on a new scar. They said that it will make the scar worse and it won't fade like it should. I don't plan to wearing any bikini's this year anyway so it's ok to have a white tummy.
