Question:
Has your Dr got a perfect record, if so let me know.

I am looking for a Gastric Bypass Dr with a perfect record. (No deaths, been doing surgery for at least 10 years,) If you have that special person please let me know. Thank you. Sandy    — sandy W. (posted on February 16, 2002)

I don't think you will find a surgeon with a perfect record. Physicians are human too.......

Good luck on that. Nobody is perfect. If they were no one would be on the memorial page.

Dr Hovland in Fargo, ND has a perfect or near perfect record. Surgery in the thousands with no surgery related deaths, I believe. It seems like there may have been one death but it wasn't related to surgery. You could call his nurse for the details. But out of 3,000 that's pretty incredible.

As the other poster stated there is no "perfect" doctor. However you can seek the death rate on the drs and the number of patients he/she has had and their success rate. I feel my dr is the best that is why i choose him. Dr wittgrove in san diego, he is the dr that did carnie wilson. he is good and well respected...good luck!

What about the perfect surgeon who operated on the imperfect patient? Seriously, this question bothers me. The nurse of the doctor I first contacted told me that it was too dangerous to operate on anyone over the age of 60 without ever seeing me or my medical records. Maybe that's one way he keeps his score down; I don't know. But the parameters of ten years surgery and no deaths might indicate an unwillingness to operate on people with any kind of problem whatsoever. And the rest of us would have to go to the imperfect surgeon. Your question makes me uncomfortable. Well, I've had my say. Nina in Maine

I have a great surgeon to recommend to you. His name is Carlos Carrasquilla and he is located in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. He has been doing WLS for over 30 years, has performed the surgery on over 600 people, he created the laparascopic technique that he uses and he has had no fatalities along with no leakage problems after the surgery. He even flies all over to teach other doctors how to do this type surgery. He is a wonderful man who is caring, sympathetic, and down to earth. If you have any questions about him, feel free to write and ask me!

I have to agree somewhat with Nina. I've said before that death rates can be deceiving. MANY surgeons will pick and choose their patients according to low risk. They don't want to increase their mortality rate. Many surgeons will operate on the morbidly obese with many comorbidities because they really have compassion for them. They do this even though they are high risk patients. I believe that I would rather have the compassionate surgeon experienced in handling post op complications. Shelley

I have to say this question bothers me to and I feel strongly about commenting... it has NOTHING to do with the author of the question as there are many people who have not been fully informed who feel that if they find this prince of a doctor they are garenteed to be all right....WRONG! When I decided to get surgery the death rate of a physican was soo far from my consciousness... I wanted someone with a reputation....a good reputation... this is success to me. There are so many factors involved in these proceedures that begins with the patient...it is unfair to put all the responsibility on the doctor. I think I would rather have a doctor that is inline with the national average as to having a fatality instead of someone who hasnt... I would hate to be the first... It is kind of like having a plane hit your house... Chances of that happening again is rarer than a house that has never been hit!!!! For all those that read this post and think that finding a doc with no fatalities is the best way to go....Think again!!!!!!!

I cannot imagine there being a surgeon who hasn't had any fatalities. But something to consider is what others have said? Were the fatalities do to serious problems the person had before the dr. operated. I cannot imagine how horrible a dr. must feel when they lose a patient. I too am afraid of weight loss surgery, for a friend of mine, and maybe even one day for myself. But, there comes a point in time where we have to look at how bad our health has become because of the weight.

I never once said the surgeon I suggested was perfect. He is a great surgeon and is well known for his abilities. Plus he has a wonderful bedside manner and personality. It just happens that he has been very lucky to have had no fatalities during surgery. The one patient of his that died did so long after the surgery and had many other health issues going on. I know that things can go wrong with anyone. He has performed surgery on many patients over 600 pounds with comorbities and he just seems like the kind of guy that would rather die himself than have one of his patients die. (kind of like the doctor BJ was speaking of). I was suggesting a wonderful doctor that I trust with my life...that does not mean that he is "perfect" or can do no wrong. I definitely recommend him though :)

Kelly is right...Dr. Carrasquilla has been chief of surgery at his hospital for the last 25 years and he is one of the top three surgeons in the nation. He has a great reputation and skill and he teaches doctors all over how to do the surgery. He is also compassionate and all of his post-op patients on this site have had nothing but good things to say about him.
