Question:
What are the signs of a staple line disruption? Just gaining weight, or not losing
anymore? What is the percentage of this happening? — Dawn H. (posted on February 5, 2002)

Dawn,
The symptoms that I've heard about are increased ability to eat larger
quantities of food, along with weight gain or cessation of weight loss. The
risk for this happening is about 1% overall.

I'd put the percentage well over 90% from experience. I could not eat much
more than usual myself, but suddenly had a pouch full of acid, pain,
nausea, misery. Most do not have pain, but do have "weight
creep".

I quit losing and had to starve and exercise to lose 10 lbs in 3 mos. I
also had some heartburn but not a lot. Mostly I could eat more and
couldn't seem to get full! I could eat 2 Lean Cuisines in one sitting.
Now, with my revision and transection, I eat 1/2 of one. If you are not
transected, your chances of disruption someday are much more than 1%.
Disruption can occur years down the road because without transection, no
scar tissue/seal will ever form. With transection, the scar tissue forms
very quickly and a tight seal is formed. Thus, the pouch is permanent.
