Question:
This is important -- what are the symptoms of feeling or being dehydrated?

And can it happen at 12 weeks post-op? I usually get all the liquids in but the past two days or so it's been difficult. I have been feeling very light-headed all day and still feel that way. I haven't measured my water intake today as I sipped all day from a dixie cup from the water cooler at work. Do you think I could be dehydrated? The only other thing I think it could be is maybe I need a different blood pressure med since I'm losing weight and it is too powerful now or something. But I feel lousy at the moment. I just made some hot (sugar free) chocolate w/skim milk as a late night snack before bed. What do you think?    — Annie H. (posted on January 28, 2002)

Hi Annie. Sounds to me like you're dehydrated, for sure. Symptoms include lightheadedness, weakness, muscle cramps (late sign). Have some broth or bullion (you need the salt in them), and sip, sip, sip. I would also call your doctor in the morning and get checked, as it would not be unusual for your BP med to need adjustment. Take care. JK, RN

One rule of thumb is if you are thirsty, you are dehydrated. Along with the soup suggested from the previous poster is try some pedialyte as well, it has added electrolytes you need as well as the salt.

What does your urine look like? That will be the easiest thing to observe and determine your fluid status. Is it a dark/concentrated yellow? Is it light yellow or almost clear? If it is the second, then I would have to believe that it is your blood pressure or your blood sugar causing you the dizziness. Maybe you should have it checked and adjusted? Good luck. Shelley
