Question:
Leak Testing on Table - LAP vs. Open?
Does leak testing in surgery (on the table) depend on if you have LAP or open? — crishsapig (posted on November 26, 2001)

i believe it depends on ur surgeons technique. my surgeon does the leak
test on the table. i have heard of other surgeons doing the same.

Nearly EVERY surgeon does a leak test on the table wether its lap or open.
Some more conserative surgeons do a test a day or so later to catch any
leakers. Drinking that stuff is unpleasant but not impossible. With leaks
so dangerous I would rather check to make sure I dont leak. Lap is better
since the chance of hernias are so low, under 1% More than 30% of opens get
hernias and I would rather avoid a second surgery. Besides laps spend fewer
days in the hospital and have less pain.
