Question:
My daughter is active in Karate and after the surgery I would like to join.
I want to know if this is a good idea because I know there is contact and I maybe kicked or ounched in the stomach. What do you think? — Theresa B. (posted on November 16, 2001)

Both my son and my husband have Black Belts in Karate. The main focus of
practicing Karate is to learn control and respect. The likelihood of you
ever getting kicked or punched in the tummy is pretty slim (excuse the
pun!)...It's a great form of exercise, and it sounds like something nice to
do with your daughter!

It's funny you mentioned this because I am now 3 1/2 wks post-op, and I've
been wanted to take Karate for years. Unless your doctor says otherwise, I
think it would be a wonderful idea. As for me, I thinking it would be good
because of the self-control (binge eating), and intense body conditioning.
It would be nice to also know how to work those little numb chuck
thingees:) Again, check with your doctor and if he gives the okay, GO FOR
IT!!!

My son is a 2nd degree Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and his school owner
recongnized that many of the moms wanted to join, but not go to all the
work of earning belts, and started Cardio-Kickboxing classes. These are
great, and the best part is that they really let you decide what you can
and can't do, and at what pace you want to go! I had to stop them about a
year ago due to a foot injury, all moving aerobics are out for me, but I
hope that in the future, I may be able to convince my PCP to let me go back
to these classes. The self-defense, boxing skills, and stress relief were
wonderful, a great boost to my confiedence, and I really miss them a lot.
In the meantime, I'll just be a great Karate mom running the camera at all
testings & tournaments!
