Question:
Does anyone else have upper back pain post-op?
I had OPEN RNY on 04/12/01 and I have lost 98 lbs. My upper back has been really hurting me. I dont know what it is and nothing I try makes it stop. I try sitting straighter with my shoulders back, but this doesnt help. Can anyone help? — lynbaby B. (posted on October 6, 2001)

I had an open RNY on 4-06-01 and also had severe upper back and rib cage
pain. Mine started the day of surgery.
I had more pain in those areas than I did in the incisional site !
I am a nurse and several nurses and 2 surgeons told me it was probably
because I was not in proper alignment on the surgery table during my
surgery.
I have found that a warm bath or shower, Tylenol X Strength
and water aerobics have helped mine a great deal !
I now only have it in my right rib cage esp. if I lift ! ( Which I do
everyday in my job! )
Talk to your Dr. ; he/she may be able to order you Celebrex or something
for the pain.
Good luck !
Connie
(lost 96 lbs )
PS: Good job on your weight loss and continued success !!

Your describing me. Back pain caused by the big loss. Our spines are trying
to straighten after being bent over for many years. Mine usually isnt
painful in the morning but starts hurting later in the day or earlier if I
am active. My PCP prescribed a mild muscle relaxer because my back muscles
are in spasm. Unfortunately his pills really havent helped much and I asked
my surgeon at support group eeting wednesday about a anti inflammatory and
he sugested celebrex. I would call your surgeon for advice, this is very
common. Its painful enough that I havent been walking.:) My only relief is
laying down for awhile.
