Question:
Can someone tell me if they have been able to eat the reduced fat peanut butter
without dumping? I am craving it and its a good source of protein. I'm just afraid to try it without knowing what to expect. — Lori W. (posted on October 5, 2001)

I am 8 weeks post open RNY. I have been able to eat small amount (1 tsp)
of peanut butter on a cracker with no dumping. We have always used the
reduced fat kind, but I have had regular peanut butter at a friend's house
with no ill effects. I generally can eat two crackers with a teaspoon each
of peanut butter and I am full.

I am Lap/rny and I eat the regular peanut butter without dumping (Skippy)
so I would think the reduced fat would be fine. I also eat the "all
natural" peanut butter. Thats the kind where the only ingredient is
peanuts. The peanut oil separates and is at the top of the jar and has to
be stirred in before eating the peanut butter. In regular peanut butter
they removed the peanut oil (which is very healthy) and replace it with
hydrogenated oils which are not so healthy. Also if you buy the all natural
you can pour some of the oil off and have low fat peanut butter but without
the oil it can be very dry.

I haven't tried purely lowfat peanut butter, but use Simply Jif. It has
33% less sugar (2g per 2 tbsp) and 8 grams of protein. It tastes
wonderful, and no dumping problems. Easy source of some good protein.

Go for it! I eat the Simply Jif peanut butter without problems. In fact,
2 saltines with peanut butter was my first meal after surgery! I ate them
the day after I came home from the hospital and they tasted great!

Simply Jif peanut butter is excellent. I've been eating it for years, and
can tolerate it just fine as a post-op. It's nice & creamy and I can't
tell the difference between regular pb & the Simply Jif. I was amazed
at how much less of it I can eat now, though.

Lori, I eat reduced fat peanut butter just about every morning--I spread a
bit on half a bagel and that's my breakfast. I'm post-op RNY, three months
out and 88 lbs down, and have never once dumped from anything--never.
