Question:
My surgery is in about a week and a half. I have developed a nasty chest cold.
Do you think they will try to reschedule my surgery until the cold clears up?? I have already taken the time off of work, arranged for babysitters etc. etc. I will just be devastated if they reschedule. Any input would be appriciated!! Thanks!!! — skymaxjr (posted on October 5, 2001)

I had the same thing that you have. It only last about a week. If you have
it still it is in your best interest to reschedule. You dont want to
delvelop phnemonia.

I had a cold 2 weeks before my
surgery and I ATTACKED IT with meds (approved by the pharmacist -- I think
it was Robitussin or something). Anyway, there was no way I wasn't going
through with the surgery. So I took what was approved, stayed my butt
inside under the covers, and drank liquids til the cows came home. I still
had a minor sniffle on the day of surgery but since I wasn't producing
green/yellow phlegm (sorry) they said I'd be ok. Good luck and God bless!

I would suggest trying Cold-Eeze.
They are over the counter zinc tablets that are supposed to lessen the
severity and length of colds.
Follow the instructions to the letter and don't stop until your cold is completely gone. But, be sure to
let your surgeon know what is going on. You do not want to risk
complications from having surgery when you are sick. It's just not worth
it! I know it's disappointing if the surgeon decides to reschedule, but
better safe than sorry.

I did the exact same thing. I was so worried. I had pre op testing the day
before my surgery. During the testing I saw two residents AND the
anesthesiologist. They listened to my chest and said my lungs were clear
so I was fine for surgery the next day. I WAS starting to get better
already. My family has a 'cold
cocktail' we use for colds. When we
first start getting one, we take Echinacea, Vitamin C and Cold Eez Cough drops with Zinc. My niece
was in nursing school and recommened this to us when she learned about
herbal remedies. Now, we all swear by it. It shortened my cold and I was fine for surgery. If you
don't have your preop testing right before your surgery...I would call your
surgeon and talk to them about it to make sure you are fine for surgery.
Usually, if your lungs are clear...you should be fine. GOOD LUCK:)
