Question:
Can you have a revision with RNY, Has anyone reading this had a revision and why do
people have revisions. If you cannot have a revision, how do people live with the mistake they made? — [Anonymous] (posted on October 4, 2001)

I have heard that revisions are possible, although I don't believe my
surgeon, who has done over 700 rny's has done one. I did hear another
surgeon say that he had done a revision for one patient who requested it.
I'm a little puzzled by your question, however. perhaps it was just the
phrasing, but I think you will find that the great majority of us do not
feel that we have made a mistake. If you think it might be a mistake for
you, then please, do not have the surgery. This is a very serious step and
should not be undertaken lightly.

During my inital consultation, my Dad asked the surgeon this same question.
He assured us that the operation is fully reversible, given that the
stomach is still in tact and functioning. However he did seem a little
puzzled in our asking that question. He said that he had never heard of
anyone having to reverse it. I guess once you get used to that life, you
don't really need to go back! Good luck to you!

According to my surgeon rny bypasses can be reversed. But, it's
more difficult surgery than the orginal rny. He said only serious
metabolic deficiencies, chronic vomiting, or continuing and dangerous
weight loss would call for reversal of an rny. I asked how often this
happens and he said. "In twenty years of doing these procedures, I've
never had a patient need or ask for a reversal".

I think you are getting the two words "revision" and
"reversal" confused. A reversal completely "reverses"
the procedure. I was told my future RNY could be reversed if need be. A
revision is a procedure to "fix" WLS that has somehow gone
awry...like a staple line disruption, or even revise an old stomach
stapling procedure to an RnY.

Yes the previous poster is correct...a revision is not a reversal. A
revision is just making a correction to the surgery because of staple line
disruption or some other reason. I am having a revision to repair a small
disruption in my staple line. This time I will also be transected so that
the staple line will not come "undone" again!
