I will be having my open RNY on Oct. 8, 2001. My doctor said in his
literature he gave me to read, NO GUM. If I were you I would call my
doctor.

try dissolving [Adolph's] a teaspoon meat tenderizer in a half cup of warm
water and drink slowly. I read this in a WLS book.

Carolyn, Are you having pain? Chances are the gum will go right on
through and not cause a problem. Personally, I wouldn't go the meat
tenderizer route unless you know you are backed up. Your pouch is too
tender to toss meat tenderizer down there if it's not absolutely necessary.
Have you had anything to drink since the gum swallow? If liquids are
going through well, have you tried a small meal yet? You MIGHT end up
having some pain from this, but it's not an absoulte. I chew gum all the
time; I consider the risk to be worth it. It keeps my mouth moist and
busy!

I've swallowed my gum twice now. Yeah, I know, dumb, but I had no problems
from it either time. I'd wait & see if a problem develops, THEN call
your Doctor if it seems necessary.
