Question:
After weight loss surgery do you need to worry about fluid overload?
my current physician constantly tells me not to drink liquids as they are not needed and says all fluid can come from food. I still drink fluids but tend to feel guilty doing so as he does not me to even drink water. — Kristin M. (posted on July 7, 2000)

I was instructed to drink water constantly to take in as much as possible.
I think you will find most people that answer this are the same way. They
say the min you should be taking in is 64 oz per day, but more is better.
You also need water to help with the weightloss.

Actually, we are in danger of dehydration with the rapid wt loss and
substandard post-op nutrition! Personally, I gained 5 # in the first week
from being stubborn about my water. Not learning this lesson, I was rather
lax about it over the next few years and got a kidney stone for my trouble.
You need AT LEAST 64 oz for the rest of your life or you are BEGGING for
trouble. Signed, Very Stubborn!

I'm not sure where your doctor got his information and I don't
like saying someone is wrong but he is WRONG! Everybody knows
you can live weeks, maybe even months without food, but you'll
only live a few days without water. I really wish you would
get a second professional opinion on this one.

You can drink to much at one sitting, and gulping water is not good.
However, you simply cannot od on water; in fact, it is critical that you
drink at least 64oz. a day to avoid developing kidney stones.

Hi Kristin, I am a nurse and this does not sound right to me. Whether you
have had gastric bypass of not, you still need water. Not drinking water
can impede your weight loss and can be dangerous if you dehydrate. It can
cause your electrolytes to be imbalanced, too. Hope this helps!
