Question:
Can I mix enough protein in the morning for the whole day?

I was wondering if I can mix up enough protein shake in the morning for the entire day? Will it still be good later on, or do I have to drink what I mix right away? I would prefer to be able to make one batch a day and drink what I need when I need it, instead of mixing it up one at a time? I appreciate any responses you can give me! Thanks.    — septembergirl73 (posted on April 20, 2005)

Unless your making it to make a super pudding that will be refrigerated, it should be drank with in 30 minutes to not lose the nutritional value of the protein. Good Luck. Denise

It depends on the kind of protein from what I understand. I know Susan Maria of BariactricEating.com makes a pitcher of it in the morning and drinks it through out the day. You might want to go to her website and check out the nectars and such.

This has been the subject of some spirited debate in the past. I'd contact the manufacturer of the protein shake directly if I were you (usually there's an 800 number for them on the product, or a website you can write to), and ask them this question. I dunno whether nutritional value's lost (or other stuff grows in the shake if left out and unrefrigerated), but I have noticed that some shakes I've tried keeping in the fridge separate and "unmix" themselves and have to be remixed again, which is enough right there for me to adhere to the 30-minute rule for the convenience of not having the stuff separate. Just my experience.

I use Nectar Fuzzy Navel mixed with crystal lite. On weekends, I mix enough for three or four drinks and keep it in a VERY cold refrigerator. Weekdays, I mix it 1 hour before in a 16 oz. bottle, freeze it for one hour, then have a yummy slushy. I read somewhere, maybe on the product web site, that there was no problem with doing that. So far, my protein levels are checking out just fine so doesn't seem to be a problem. The suggestion to check with the product manufacturer is a good one.

Yes, I was told it is very important to drink any protein drink right away or it loses its potency. Karen W. in Manteca, CA

ISOPURE now makes a already mixed, clear protein drink (consitency of water) and it tastes pretty good especially served very cold! I am sitting here drinking one now. Check your local GNC. It can be drank throughout the day!

The integrity of the protein begins to break down exactly when? 17 min after it's made? 34 min? 49 min? At what point did the bacteria begin to grow? It's totally your call, of course, but I would not consume a drink that was more than 1/2 hr old, and I don't care if it was in the fridge, sealed in Tupperware. Not worth taking a chance.

Thanks so much for the wonderful replies. You all seem to say the same thing... DONT DO IT! I didn't think it would be a good idea, but I just hate mixing them! I will do it if I have to. I think I should ask my nutrition specialist, I can't believe I didn't think to ask her before. I actually used Isopure right out of surgery, apple melon was my fav... but I can't afford to buy that all of the time. I usually use GNC's 50 gram slam... but sometimes I run out and I have to use my powder mix... which I hate mixing.. thats why I ask. But, I wil do it if I have to, that is the nature of the surgery... sometimes I have to do what I don't want to! Thanks so much everyone!

Hi! I talked to a nutritionist at the last California OH conference She says there isn't any 'scientific' evidence that protien breaks down that quickly. She said the key is to keep it cold...I think she said 40 degrees...but I can't really remember. Of course...you know science...the opinion can change tomorrow.

I believe that the body can only absorb 20-30 gramns of protein per meal. Any more would be a waste.

Have you considered myoplex? It comes in pre-made cartons. I really like it. A ______________________________ April 11, 2005/Duodenal Switch Dr. Alfons Pomp New York City, New York

When I mix my drinks at home, it's my ProScore 100 choc with 8 oz water, ice in Magic Bullet. (was hand blender for 10 yrs) When I'm out, I use my pre-loads. They are any kind of bottles (water bottle, Snapple)that have been washed & dried. I put 30g powder in each bottle (I have about 60 bottles--there are 2 of us doing 6 per day), keep a dozen in each car and a case of water. I can add 4-5 oz of water at a red light, shake it up and have it down the hatch before I reach my destination. It's not as tasty. Yuck, warm car water, but if I can, I stop and toss some ice in. Still, it gets them in, fast, small, and there's 30g protein with about 3 g sugar. I'm not suggesting you do 180g protein a day. I just do to hold my wt down. I lost 150 # and I don't want ANY of them finding me again.
