Question:
At 10 months post-op does food still taste bad to you?

Hi all, I'm 10 months post-op and almost every day food doesn't really seem to taste very good. Is this normal? I don't really have much of an interest in eating anything because of this, but will feel hungry. I will eat something that tastes delicious, and have it again another time, and it will taste totally disgusting. Does anyone else experience this? Sometimes when I get into a meal, the food will taste okay for the first few bites, but with every bite I take, I start to feel nauseous and will stop eating before my hunger is satisfied. So then I go searching for something else to supplement my meal with, and it usually ends up being something that isn't real healthy. This is so frustrating for me. I never know what I want to eat. I actually have to wander around the grocery store and try to find something that sounds kind of good to eat. Please help. I would appreciate any thoughts or experiences you might have.    — Christine L. (posted on February 22, 2003)

Yes, it sounds normal to me. Either it doesn't taste as good as I thought OR it tastes WAY too good. Sigh.

To me, I have the worst time with meat and fish. You have to chew it to death that it tastes awful by the time you actually get around to swallowing it. One of the keys to me is getting something to jack up the flavor where it's satisfying. I use salsas that are really hot. A spoonful is really all it takes. Sometimes low-salt soy sauce helps or sometimes worcestershire. Just have to keep the flavor and a little dab will do ya!

You don't drink water after the lemon you drink decaffeinated tea. This will reset your taste buds and you should be able to tolerate more flavors and tastes. It works according to Carol Zuvers. She tried it after the doctor in the chat room had said that is how you reset your taste buds. I know it is the tea you drink because I had saved the post on the message board that Carol had made about it working.

I am 16 months out. At 10 months, a lot of foods did still taste pretty bad to me. I found that in the past couple of months things are starting to taste better and more like they used to. I agree with the salsa person. I hated spicy foods prior to surgery. Now, I like the kick they have.
