Question:
I weigh 414lbs...will this really work for me? My bmi is over 50?? What
are the realistic chances of a successful surgery? — [Anonymous] (posted on October 14, 2001)

I see no reason this should not work for you. I started at 535 last Sept 6
2000. I have lost 125 lbs. with no complications. Good Luck

My husband had the surgery on 8/30/01. He weighed over 500 pounds. He is
due at the doctor's this Wednesday, so we are unsure of his total weight
loss to this time (he doesn't weigh in between visits). But, as of his
last visit, (3 weeks ago) he had lost 46 pounds in just under 4 weeks. I am
sure he's lost at least another 25 pounds since then. I think it can work
for you. Check the before and after photos in this website. They are a
true inspiration. (By the way, I had the surgery (RNY) on 7/30/01 myself).

Before surgery my BMI was 51 sometimes 52. My surgery was 8/27/01 and my
BMI is now 44.4 so yes - I think you can do it - if you want to do it. But
you gotta want to do it.

There's not guarantee, of course, but depending on the type of surgery, the
way it's done, your post-op plan, and YOU, it should work well indeed.
There's a little lady in our support group who started out over 500#, and
had dropped 250 by her 1 year anniversary date! I certainly am impressed!

My BMI was 52 when I had my surgery 18 months ago (& it had been higher
st times). My BMI is now 26. I've had NO real complications at all &
feel great most of the time. I never thought it could really happen for me,
but it did.

04/13/01 started at 398.2 pounds, 10/15/01 279 pounds down a total of 119
pounds in six months. Yes it works, best of luck to you.

Yes! You are a great candidate for WLS, IF YOU YOURSELF want it. Don't
let anyone talk you into it -- This is NOT an easy choice; takes tremendous
courage. That said, my husband on 6/12/01 weighed 349, had a fasting blood
sugar WITH HIS MEDICATION of 308, and felt miserable most of the time. As
of yesterday, he has lost 81 pounds, cleaned off our deck for the first
time in eight years, and his blood sugars are NORMAL. Praise the Lord!
The most important thing is your TEAM. Make sure you trust your surgeon
and his staff -- get one who provides nutritional and post-op support.
Hope this helps.

I know it's hard to hold out hope when everything else in the diet and
exercise realm has let you down, but I think this really could work for you
as it has for so many others. My BMI was 53.3 before my surgery, and only
four short weeks later, it's 47.8 (and I haven't weighed yet this morning).
:-) I am shooting to lose 150 lbs, to get to 150, and I will feel like a
success if I get anywhere close to that. Good luck!

Check out the duodenal switch. It's the best type for us supersized folks.
Ok, I admit I'm prejudiced, but it really is! LOL Chris

I had open RNY a little over 2 years ago. I weighed 378 pounds on my
surgery day. I was so afraid that I would be able to outsmart this
surgery, that everyone would know that I had gone ahead and done this
"drastic deed", and failed at EVEN THAT..... and on & on...
FEAR stands for False Education Appearing Real... Today, I weigh 130
pounds. I have so much energy, and can truly enjoy going places with my
family. This summer we went on vacation and walked and walked. I looked
around and noone was paying any attention to me, directly or overtly. I
was just one of the crowd! I grabbed my husband and my son's hand and said
a prayer of thanks to God for helping me to take control of my life. Yes,
it can work for you as long as you go into this with your eyes wide open.
Your life will change forever. Some of the changes and requirements ARE
difficult, BUT WELL WORTH IT! Let's see, a snicker's bar.... or a size
8????? Hmmmmm....
