Question:
Anyone on a antidepressant that hasn't caused weight gain?
2-3 months ago my PCP started me on 2omg of sarafem(aka prozac in a much lower strength)for depression. Since being on it i have gained 13 pounds when i was told it would probably make me lose some...not the case! I still have quite a few pounds that i want to lose I am 2yrs post op and this is the first time I have gained and it is scaring the heck out of me. I excersise 5 days a week and just started increasing my protein intake. So i guess i have a choice be depressed and maybe start dropping weight again or not be depressed and possibly gain more weight. Anyone on an antidepressant that hasn't caused you to gain? My surgeon said just about everyone causes weight gain. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I am frustrated and scared that after all this hard work i am failing. — Tammy N. My husband went on a generic Prozac prescription, and he gained weight,
after never being overweight in his life, he was fighting the major tire
action around his middle. I read (I believe on here) that Prozac is known
to cause weight gain, and my doctor confirmed that. Oddly enough, years
ago, one doctor that told me I shouldn't get WLS said that Prozac would
help me lose weight....uh...NO! Anyway, my husband has been on EFFEXOR now
for a month, and weight is falling off of him. Suddenly he is motivated to
eat healthy, and exercise. It is true that theoretically all
anti-depressants can cause weight gain, but everyone's body chemistry is
different, so changing to something else won't absolutely cause a problem.
Good luck to you!

I am 3 mos post-op and down 70lbs. I was on paxil before and shortly after
my surgery. I went for a blood test and my liver enzymes were very high, my
doctor stopped paxil because she said this could be the reason. I am now on
Fluoxine and its been great and I've had no wieght gain.

Hi, I may be the oddball here, but when my pcp started me on Zoloft almost
2 years ago, I dropped 20 pounds almost immediately. For some reason, it
made me not obsess about food; I wasn't up prowling for food late at night,
and I actually was able to stop eating after I was full, not when my plate
was empty.
<p>Now that I'm post op, I'm continuing my Zoloft because I have a
hormone imbalance. My weight loss is steady at this time. Hope this
helps!

I take Lexapro for anxiety but it is an antidepressant. I started because
of the terrible PMS that I have had since surgery and it is working very
well and it also helps with the food thoughts. I have not gained weight at
all.

Wellbutrin was a good choice for me when I was taking one shortly after my
father died. It actually depressed my hunger a little bit and helped with
cravings somewhat. Good luck. hugs,

You are not failing - you just ran into a drug side effect. For many of
the newer antidepressants the side effect can be either weight gain or
weight loss - from the same drug. That is why one person can tell you they
lost weight while taking prozac and it causes you to gain weight. Ask your
doctor to switch you to a different drug, perhaps Zoloft? I am having good
luck with it. I had weight gain with Paxil.
