Question:
Anyone have other family members who have had WLS?
Just curious. My mother, sister and I have all had the surgery - RNY - mother, open, my sister and I had lap. procedure. They both took forever to recover - i.e. getting energy back and getting up and around. Myself, I was anxious from day 2. I was ready to go home! Just wondering if anyone had similar experience. Thats like me and Jen. I recoivered fast, walked 3 times the day of
surgery, fact walked right when I got to room after leaving recovery. Spent
2 days in hospital and tried to get out early. Was up and about a lot and
one week after surgery walked 1.3 miles in julys heat to visit wife at
work. She rode me home. Was mostly bored and retrned to work part time for
something to do. Back full time in less than month, I work in non air
conditioned places or would of been full time faster.
Jen had a
hard time, moved slow, didnt like walking or drinking fluids, ended up back
in hospital for IV fluids and was generally miserable.Jen was off over 1.5
months and wasnt thrilled with going back. We all recover differently, the
important thing is eventually arriving at feeling good. Speed is nice but
not critical.

Bob, when you said your wife rode you home, I get this mental picture of
her on your back as you walked home! Wow! You were like superman after this
surgery. LOL
My oldest brother had open-RNY in 1999. Back then he tried to get me to
have surgery too. I thought he was nuts. At the time, I'd never been
overnight in a hospital and the thought of surgery was out of the question.
Now, having lost my eating buddy and seeing how much his life has changed,
I wish I would've done it back then. Still waiting for a consult.

Hi, my cousin and my Aunt both had this surgery about 10 years ago and did
great, my Aunt did have a problem with her incision, it opened a little,
but finally healed, they both did great with their weight loss, my cousin
however has gained back most of her weight in the last few years. She is
not eating right and is drinking alot of beer, she is looking into a
revision right now. Hopefully she will get it done soon, and stick to the
right way of eating, she really knows this is her last chance of doing it
right. Lots of love, Amy

My younger daughter, cousin, husband, and I have all had lap RNY surgery,
and my older daughter is scheduled for her lap RNY in September. Each
surgery was completely problem-free and we are all happily at goal... and
healthier than ever before in our adult lives. This surgery has been
nothing short of a miracle for our family.

Yep - my sister Kim and I had our surgeries on the same day - same hospital
- same surgeon- same insurance. We even work for the same company! We are
2 years and 9 months apart in age. We both had open RNY 10 weeks ago and
are doing great. Kim is down 53 lbs and I'm down 43 lbs. Since we work
together we see eachother every day and are able to compare notes. My
recovery was a bit faster than hers but she's kicking my butt now!

My cousin that open rny in June 2001 and has lost 140lbs so far. She did
have some problems at 3 months post op that required here to have more
surgery. I had my open rny in January 2002. I did have a few minor
problems and I have lost 95lbs (at my last weigh in - 1 month ago). Tracy

I am having my open RNY in Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada on November 4/02,

I am 28 years old and looking to have RNY soon. My mother had stomach
stapling in 1978.So, I grew up knowing what kind of things she went thru
with surgery. I remember thinking that there was NO WAY it was worth all of
the gas and vomitting and pain sneezing, etc. Now, I realize those are
small prices to pay for health and an active life. My mom did keep most of
her weight off until about 6 years ago. Now she is looking into a revision.
(Which leads me to ask if anyone else has had a revision) My aunt also has
WLS a few years ago. I'm not sure of the type, but she has gained quite a
bit of weight back. She did great in the beginning. I believe alot of hers
is the food choices she makes. She still can't eat alot, but she can put
away the junk food. I also have 2 very close friends looking into having
this surgery too. I am thrilled that maybe I will have someone to go thru
this with me.Good luck to all. God Bless.

I am hoping to have surgery. My mother had WLS in the mid-80's. Like the
earlier poster, I too grew up seeing the side effects of the surgery and
didn't think it was worth it either. Now I am willing to live with any of
the side effects of WLS. BTW, my mom has kept off all but 30 pounds of her
weight for 15 yrs now! Way to go Mom!

Great question! My aunt had open RNY April, 2001. I had my open RNY in
June, 2001. My mom had HER open RNY in June, 2002. We all used the same
surgeon, and we're all doing GREAT! My aunt is either at or close to her
goal, I'm at our surgeon's goal, about 30 lbs from my personal goal, and my
mom is down 28 lbs in just 5 weeks.
As far as recovery, it seems like Mom is doing the best. I had to have a
second surgery 2 weeks after my original surgery (believe it or not, my
G-tube was stuck!), which really set me back. My aunt's lung collapsed
after her surgery, but she's done great since she got home. But my mom has
done even better! She's been running around ever since she got home from
the hospital. The lady amazes me! And, she is the OLDEST of us 3...she's
54!!! Way to go MOM!!!
