Question:
Besides beer/wine, what have post ops drank?
Hi all, I've seen plenty of questions about taking a drink after surgery, etc. But what I usually see is someone asking about beer or perhaps wine. I am 11 weeks post op today and will be taking a trip out of town this weekend with my husband and another couple. My question is: have any post ops out there had something like a mixed drink?? I love strawberry daquris and margaritas, but I also worry about the sugar content. I am not wanting to get smashed or anything like that. I rarely drink as a matter of fact (last drink was New Year's Eve). I can't stand beer and I'm not a real wine drinker either. Also, does liquor cause any problems (like tequila or bacardi rum)?? I don't want to blow a hole through my stomach either! Can anyone help me with this?? Thanks!!! Oh yeah, down 53 pounds, whoo hoo! — Laura P. (posted on July 10, 2001)

My drink of choice has been vodka. I cant drink much and I have to drink
water on the side; or I feel dehydrated. Two sips gets me a bit loopy so
take it easy and have a great time!

I don't care for wine or beer - if I drink I have a Kamikaze, maybe 1 every
3 months or so. No problems at all, but one goes a loooooong ways for me!

I had two Long Island Teas (a few different hard things mixed)and the new
Smirnoff Ice in one night with no problems. I've also had a margarita wine
cooler a couple of times since surgery. The only thing I'd suggest is that
you make sure you drink extra water the next day to get rid of any swelling
you might have and rehydrate. Have fun this weekend!

I can drink captain/coke's, stoli raspberry/lemonade/cranberry juice,
Vodka/OJ. etc. The only drink that I have had that I couldn't handle was a
white russian--too sweet. I have done shots too!! Have fun, but be
careful. You may want to try something at home first to make sure that you
don't dump on it. Some of my friends dump on the sugar.

4/6/03 Okay, here's my experience and bear in mind that I am only 7 weeks
post op and this was unexpected. I went to an office party and drank
frozen margaritas. I had the first one and whoa....it was like a ton of
bricks...took me about 1.5 hours to drink. The "buzz" wore off
quickly. I had another one an hour or so later...same thing. I didn't
dump or anything but about 5 minutes after I started drinking I felt almost
drunk. Beer on the other hand is my safe drink. I buy it...let it sit in
front of me, walk around with it and take baby sips all night...have yet to
drink more than half that way and still feel like I am part of the
crowd...:)

There are a couple things to remember. 1) With a smaller pouch, the
effects of an "ice cream headache" can be greatly amplified. So,
a few drinks into that frozen daquari and you may be doubled over in pain
if your little pouch gets frozen! Drink it slowly. 2) People with liver
problems can have issues with alcohol. A fatty liver may have been a
comorbidity for sugery for some people. Most or all bariatric doctors will
tell you never to drink alcohol at all, but we live in the real world where
people drink. I drink mixed drinks, and don't have any problems. Sugar
can be an issue, too, but there are many suger free drinks out on the
market (V8 has several sugar free "Splashes" that mix well with
alcohol. I'm over 1 year out and still make myself sick if I drink
something with too much sugar) And, remember, each person is different, so
don't listen to any of us--we are all full of bullsh*t.
