Question:
I am going to purchase private insurance BUT!!!
I heard that with Kaiser you need to be a member a minimum of one year... Who do you feel is the best company to go with? Kaiser, Aetna, Blue Shield??? I am waiting to purchase until I hear from anyone that has any suggestions. Also does anyone know if the state Medi-cal I believe would cover the cost? Thank You ... — [Anonymous] (posted on July 4, 2001)

I have Kaiser and one of their requirements is 1 year with them. They also
have criteria you have to meet to be approved for WLS. Over 50 BMI chances
of approval are higher. Under you need other medical problems, documented.
Can't say about the other insurers.

If I were going to purchase insurance for this I would have to do some
research into the exact policy you are purchasing. Many insurance
companies have so many different policies/exclusions all within the same
company. Also you might want to consider the pre-exsisting clause. I've
only had my insurance 6 months, but was approved partly because I had no
documented physican visits regarding weight loss in the past year. You may
have to have the policy for one year before requesting authorization for
any procedure regarding WLS

I had to purchase my own insurance as well and I got Aetna. I could not be
happier with my choice! I live in Missouri and have the USAccess Plan. I
think with individual plans they now only offer the HMO. Anyway, from what
I understand, they approve no matter what you are: HMO, PPO, etc. I was a
member for only a month and I was approved in one day! I have actually
never heard of Aetna denying anyone. They usually approve after the first
letter and if not they require more info. sent to them. I just requested a
packet from the Janet at the Midwest Bariatric Center in Wentzville and
filled it out and mailed it in. That was the extent of my involvement.
Janet did the rest. I recommend Aetna HIGHLY. If you have any questions
don't hesitate to e-mail me at [email protected]
