Question:
Can someone please tell me how long after sugery can you start to exercise?

Following my lap RNY, I was instructed to rest for the first 3 weeks, then
to begin a walking program of a minimum of 15 minutes, 5 times a week.
After the 6th week post-op, I was allowed any form of exercise, including
swimming, weight training and aerobics. Patients having "open
surgery" might expect a somewhat longer, slower recovery period and
should follow their surgeon's guidelines regarding exercise.

My doctor told me to sit up and start walking the day after surgery. I
walked the hospital unit 3 times, then 4 times per day and then once every
hour, slow, but sure, before I left. Then when I got home, I walked
somemore, morning and night, as far as I could. At 8 weeks, I started
riding an adult tricycle and just kept increasing my time and distance. My
doctor complains to me that it isn't enough, little dictator that he is.
He now wants me to add weightlifting at one year. He has told all of us in
the post-op support group to do as much as we can, as often as we can and
to build exercise into our life, such as climbing the stairs instead of
taking the elevator. good Luck to you!

You can start walking on day one. SLOWLY increase time and speed, but
don't rush yourself during the first couple or four weeks. Now, if you are
asking about other exercise, WAIT for 6 weeks minimum, 8 weeks preferred.
Don't go swimming either -- but you could walk in the water slowly. Don't
lift over 10 pounds for 8 weeks. You don't want a hernia and another
surgery and another 6 to 8 week recovery period, so please heed my advice.
Best wishes.
