Question:
Has anyone else ever had this happen? I am 6 days Post-Op and suddenly smells

and odors are overpowering me. I was sleeping in my chair awakened by the smell of my dog coming in the house after being outside. My hubby bent down to kiss me and I had to turn my head and ask him to go brush his teeth. When he lit a cigarette, I instantly became nautious. They are normal smells...No one is filthy and my house isnt that bad even After 6 days post-op without Mom....but i can't seem to get away from the odors....What is this?? any ideas?    — Tracy L. Did you have the RNY? I don't know what causes it but it seems like the people that had the RNY have a strange reaction to smells. Yours is different than mine. I have a hard time sitting in a restaurant after I have eaten without getting nautious. something you just have to live with....

Wow! I thought this was just me, or that the anesthesia was still in my system causing this. For days, every time there was food or especially water, I kept smelling a strange odor from it, that is hard to describe, but sort of medicinal. 42 days later, is definitely diminished, but I can recall it instantly. Also had lap RNY

I read your post while on the phone with my mom and it was like reading something I would of written...So I hung up right away to post to ya lol.I Had my Open Rny on April 3rd and I too was sickened by the same smells as you, (I quit smoking the day I went in for surgery)so when I came home from the hospital my husband was kind enough to go outside to smoke but hed come in and put his hands on my face or kiss me and Id about toss my cookies, and the dog smell was unreal....Im not sure what causes it to make us so sick but know that it does pass.Everything is okay for me now.Take Care.

I had that start immediately! I walked into a market 8 days post op and nearly vomited in the meat section! It's unreal. Cooking foods cause the same problem. Ughhh! Maybe it is anesthesia related...no clue.

Wish I had an answer--boy, do I! I had BPD/DS in Janurary, and STILL have this! So it's not just RNYers or very recent post-ops who have unpleasantly altered or exaggerated sense of smell. Car exhaust makes me want to puke, and so does canned dog food, and many more everyday smells. Many things smell very different from before, and many are no longer pleasant that I used to really like. I have yet to hear a theory that makes sense THIS long after surgery. I am being treated for "post-antibiotic colitis", which may be a factor (but no, the MEDICINE didn't cause the smell change--I had it long before the new med for colitis). I have also heard "vagal irritation", but no MD I've asked endorses that as very likely or reasonable. So, I'm dying to hear, too!--Jesse

I had an Open VBG in Nov of last year and also an open gallbladder removal mar of this year and both times I struggled with odor sensitivity. It went away after a few weeks for me both times and now I'm ok. But I would get sick to my stomach with smells that I didn't notice before. I'm grateful it's better now.

I am 3 weeks out from an RNY and I can barely open the fridge. All smells bother me. I actually got the dry heaves after getting my kids cereal this morning. From all I know it is normal for some.

I am 9 months post op and there are smells that make me physically ill. I used to love Burger King whoppers, just the smell made me craving! Since surgery, I cannot even tolerate the smell and the thought of eating them makes me physically ill. I tried it a few weeks ago and threw up.
