I keep seeing references about "tongs." What is the story about "tongs?" — Angela P. (posted on March 23, 2001)

This is one of the recommended ways to clean yourself after a trip to the
bathroom. You hold the TP with tongs. When you're that sore & that
big, you need a little extra help.

HI there...I had read about tongs...and thought what a great idea...so I
went to my local $1 store and bought a pair ( you know..so I wouldnt be
using the ones from the kitchen drawer) Anyhow...I found them to be
terribly difficult to use. When in the hospital...I had a nurse help me
twice. And when I got home, I asked my mom to help twice as well. I did
not need that help often, at about 7 days post-op I was able to clean
myself. Today I am 11 days post-op and I am doing great. It wont hurt try
tongs...and if it works for you GREAT...but if it doesnt...be prepared to
ask for assistance. And dont be afraid to ask...because one day...that
loved one may ask you to help them out.

I know lots of people have had good luck with tongs, but I used a wooden
spoon (new, and threw it away 10 days postop) with flushable wipes wrapped
around it. Easy and effective.

FYI: Not everyone needs help to reach ourselves 'there' after surgery.
But, for those who do, the tongs seem to do the trick.
