Question:
Has anyone ruptured their new stomach?
I knew a kid in high school that had open RNY surgery & after about 1 1/2 month back home from the hospital, he ruptured his "new" stomache & gained about 60 pounds back! I was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with this happening! — Angela P. (posted on January 21, 2001)

My staple line disrupted at 5 yrs post-op. It is, unfortunately, pretty
common with a stomach that has not been transected (divided). All that
happens with the disruption is that you no longer have the partition that
separates the pouch from the stomach. That allows food to be fully
digested & absorbed, so we lose the malabsorptive component of the
surgery, although sometimes the disruption is severe enough to allow a lot
more food to pass. So, that intereferes with the restrictive part of the
procedure, too. People do NOT outeat their surgeries, generally speaking.
But the surgeries have mechanical failures.
