Question:
Are the symptoms of dumping different for each person?
I am 6 wks post-op and I don't know if I am dumping or not! I have eaten as much as 12g of sugar in applesauce and in a protein bar and the only thing that has happened is I get VERY sleepy and have to lay down for a nap! Yesterday I napped for two hours after the protein bar. I was almost unconscious it seemed. Could I be dumping in a different way than someone else? I haven't eaten any really bad things like candy but sugar is sugar, right? Please any one tell me your symptoms of dumping. I had open rny. Thanks! — Marilyn C. (posted on January 10, 2001)

Yep! I respond to carbohydrates the same way--- I just feel like laying my
head down on the table and going right to sleep. I wish it was worse,
actually----I really do.
I am going to have to watch it later, after my weight is lost. But I
really have to be careful if I am teaching, or out with friends, or going
to drive--- cause I WILL need a nap if I have a couple of spoonsful of
mashed potatoes, a cookie, etc!
I am 9 months out, 115 pounds gone, and absolutely no complications.
I wouldn't worry about it--- the one thing I have found in all these months
here is how different we ALL are from each other! Hope you are drinking
lots of water---good luck!

Yep, sugar is sugar. Any of it can fatten you back up again, unfortunately.
I also get sleepy, but get dry mouth, cold hands & feet, fuzzy vision
and thinking, nausea and heart palpitations, but no vomiting or diarrhea.
Lucky me. Makes it a LOT easier to avoid the sugars. Everyone's dumping
level is different and at a varying levels during the day. But the object
is to get as FEW sugar g in as possible to get as many lbs to fall off as
possible.

We are definitely all different!! Sugar (unfortunately) doesn't really make
me dump. If I get enough of it, I get really grumpy and just don't feel
very well. Fats, on the other hand, make me dump immediately. I get the
nausea, cramps, weakness, vomiting, the whole nine yards. Some things will
bother me one day and not the next. I am 11 months postop, down 110 pounds
and STILL learning what I can eat and what to avoid. Chicken is still the
worst, can't keep it down no matter how it is fixed. Good luck.

Hello!
I had a VBG with RNY on October 03, 2000. For the first 8 weeks...I napped
alot. Now-days I have a higher energy level.
Sugars/sweets do give me temporary flu-like symptoms (nausea, weakness
etc...) Some fats...like mayonaise...have similar effects.
Hugs, Sharon

No, you aren't dumping. Yes, you are reacting to the extra carbs by
getting sleepy.

I get the same thing and I think it's a form of dumping. All dumping means
is that the sugar is going into the intestines too quickly and causing an
over-production of insulin. I get the classic symptoms of dumping to a
minor degree (palps, sweating, nausea, shakiness) if I eat A LOT of sugar
but if I only eat a tiny bit of sugar I'll get extremely tired, like I can
just tap a nap right there.
