Question:
How Does Disability Work?
Fortunately, I have never been required to take a long period of time off work. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how disability works? My company does not offer sick time and I have used my vacation time. If I go on disability how long does it take to get a check and how close to my regular earnings would it be? Any info would be helpful - I'm in California. — Shannon O. (posted on November 18, 1999)

It can take two weeks for your claim to go thru the SDI system
and it will not be a lot!!
It is like unemployment (fyi $50.00 per week up to 125.00)
it is paid every 2 weeks and you have to fill out a request
report with every check.

I can only tell you about my experience with disability. I honestly think
it varies from company to company. I am having surgery in 2 weeks and
recently went over the disablility forms with my human resources dept. The
first 7 calender days they don't pay for so if you have vacation or sick
time accumulated you can use that. After that you get UP to 300 dollars per
week. I say up to because it depends on your salary. I know that it takes a
couple of weeks for disability to start. Again I am only speaking for the
company that I work for and it also may vary from state to state. You may
want to speak with your human resources dept. about your company policy.
Hope this helps and good luck.

State disability in california works like this. It doesn't pay the first 7
days after that depending on your highest quarter you can be paid from
$50-336 per week. for as long as your doctor take you off for.
