Question:
Does anyone know anything about Dr. John Nye of Pensacola,FL?
I was referred to him by my insurance--he is a thoracic surgeon who apparently also does WLS both open and laparoscopically. Does anyone know him? — Cheryl W. (posted on August 22, 1999)

Hi, Dr. Nye was my surgeon and he is great (his staff is, too). I had an
open RNY 6 weeks ago, am doing great, no complications. He's been doing
these surgeries for a long time and he's the best. Good luck to you.

I know someone who has had an appointment with him. He is most surely a vey
competant doctor but he is not a member of ASBS. He does not specialize in
treating people like us who need more than a skilled surgeon. The PA and
other office staff seem bothered by you questions (sound familiar?) You
might want to check out the bariatric surgeons in Gainesville, FL which are
all happy to treat people for WLS and invite your proactive approach. Seems
that the true bariatric surgeonslike obese people instead of tolerate us.
Of course, some people have been very happy with Dr. Nye. So, I would go
with a gut instinct and if you have any reservations about any doctor,
check out someone else. Haven't we been discriminated for long enough?

Dr. John David Nye of Pensacola, Florida
I have been very impressed so far with Dr. Nye and his staff. They have
been very kind and helpful both on the phone and at my initial evaluation
appointment. Dr. Nye and his nurse Rose both spent much time with me,
taking my history, answering my questions, and explaining everything about
the procedure. Dr. Nye also has an excellent surgical record. At first they
require frequent aftercare appointments post-surgery, which gradually taper
off to less frequently. There's no support group or meetings in place, so
his staff are your support group to a large extent. I'm not a person who
needs a lot of hand-holding, so this is OK with me. Plus I have found lots
of support online and from other post-ops I've located, so I intend for
these folks to be my support group!
