Question:
I am 7 wks post-op(RNY). Can I eat too much and not know??
My dietician told me to add healthy foods that I like, lots of protien, chew a lot, etc. and my body would tell me what I can and cannot tolerate. I am eating much less than I did before, but I have had very little "input" from my body. I lost 20lbs. the first two weeks and I've only lost about 14 sisce then. I'm afraid I'm eating too much. I get hungry every few hours and can eat whatever I want with no reaction. Will my body let me know??? How do I know ??? I'm terrified of eating too much and not loosing. I avoid most sweets, and bread, but eat everything else. Is this normal?? — jiggers (posted on July 9, 1999)

Hi Jan, 34 lbs in 7 weeks sounds within normal limits. How many ounces
are you eating in one sitting and how much time are you allowing for meals?
Do you ever feel that tight full feeling in your chest ro have increased
salivation after a meal? A good rule of thumb that I use is to prepare no
more than 6 ounces at a time and allow 30-45 minutes for feedings and then
stop when you feel full. You may e-mail me directly at [email protected] or

Are you avoiding milk and sugar? How completely? Taking a protein
supplement? Drinking more water than you could ever want? What kind of RNY
did you have? If you eat things that block your ouotlet, you'll know. If
you beamce lacotse intolerant, you'd know. If you had problems with too
much sugar, you'd know. HOWEVER, if you don't react to something badly, it
doesn't mean it won't stop your weight loss. Being able to tolerate milk or
sugar doesn't mean that they are a good thing, for example.

It is possible to "graze" all day and never really feel
full. And this this not a good thing to do. When I graze
I tend to make the wrong food choices. I try to eat on a
schedule, at least during the work week, and have my meals
planned out so I know I am eating properly. It helps me.

At 7 wks. post-op I could tolerate most veggies(fresh or canned),Chex
cereal, small amts. of olive oil, turkey, chicken(cooked on the grill),
salad with F.F. dressing(watch the sugar content). You should feel
satisfied but not stuffed like we used to feel was normal. I snack on
pretzels. Try to eat 6-8 small servings a day. You don't have to have 3 big
meals a day, I love the small meals because then I get to eat more often.
Make your choices healthy foods. By eating more often you keep your insulin
level even and your metabolism working faster. You won't have cravings. I
eat alot of fruits now, I can tolerate WOW chips too. Salsa is great-you
can put it on everything. Eat about a cup at a time, but remember you can
eat again in a few hours. Good Luck.
