Question:
Would like to have more info on this type surgery.
I understand that this type surgery is quite new and effective, and that it can easily be adjusted for more weight loss. Has anyone out there had it? — Alyce K. (posted on June 19, 1999)

When I was researching different types of surgeries in
Sept, 1998 the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding
was an investigational procedure which had not yet been
approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in
the United States.

First of all, I'd second Patty's resources. Getting in touch with the
Bandsters group and reading their rsearch is a great place to start.
The band is a great option for those of us who dislike the idea of
cutting/stapling of the stomach or don't want malabsorptive techniques. I
had my band install in early December and have lost 24 pounds. That may
seem slow when looking at RNY or DS rates, but it's a slow and steady loss
and it's been shamefully easy. I expect to reach my goal of 100-110 pounds
off by December of this year. I honestly believe that this procedure will
replace VBG as the standard for restrictive WLS within the next two years.
If you want to chat more about the band, get in touch with me privately of
come on over to the bandsters list.

FYI - The article I just posted under surgery types states that this
procedure
results in about a 50% loss of excess weight.
