Question:
Why do some bariatric patients still have indigestion after the surgery is done?
I've always thought that once an rny was done there was no stomach acid in the pouch, so no indigestion. So now I wonder why there is indigestion. — [Anonymous] (posted on May 13, 1999)

The reason is that the food backs up the esophagus(sp) more
easily.
I especially get this when I eat to many carbs.

As I understand it, it has something to do with the removal
of the gall bladder. I had gallstones prior to surgery, news
to both myself and my doctor. Although I had been having
gall bladder attacks for years and no one had ever diagnosed
it as such. I have to take a 300 mg cimetidine pill each night
before bed (the equivilant of Tagament) to prevent the indigestion
at night.

When you have the operation at first, you have to start out on liquids for
2 weeks, if gives your new stomach time to get the acids back into your
stomach, yes the acids come back so you can digest your food properly. I
had this operation done 6 weeks ago and I burp and toot, but it relieves
your stomach if you overate too much too. Things go back to normal. But
not the acid reflux disease, it cures it.
