Question:
Has anyone become a vegetarian since surgery? What is the process?

I have had an extremely difficult time digesting most meats. I am thinking of becoming a vegetarian, and I would like to get any information regarding the process or the health benefits/risks.    — Carmen P. (posted on October 22, 1998)

Well, I'm not currently a vegatarian, but some of my family members are. The most important thing is to make sure you get enough of your complex protiens. (The things you would be normally getting from meats.) The combination of beans and rice togeather will provide most of what you need, also Tofu is a great nutritional substitute, although it is very high in fat. The most important thing is to be aware of the nutritional value of the foods you are eating, and adjust your diet accordingly.

Hi, I had GBP one year ago and have been a vegetarian since 6 months post-op. I feel fine, but you must make sure you are getting protein! I am still on my doctor's recomendation of 70% protein and 30% veggies. There are lots of products that cater to vegetarians such as gardenburgers, salads, veggies, vegetarian hot dogs, corndogs and even products that taste like chicken and beef. I eat a lot of vegetable and tons of calcium related products (Calcium bein protein). You can get protein from beans, peanut butter and eggs too. After surgery I was so sick of chicken and deli meat, I swore I could never eat it again, so I haven't!
