Question:
How long after surgery do you have to wait to do any lifting?
I have a 2 year old and am considering LAP surgery. I just wondered how long I would need to wait before being able to lift him (i.e. changing diapers, bathing, etc.) — Samantha S. (posted on January 22, 2005)

Hi there. I had Lap RNY on 12-02-4. My doctor said after two weeks I was
all set to return to normal, including picking up my 18 month old. He said
with Lap, the risk of hernia is almost none so picking up things can be
done sooner. Best wishes, I am thrilled with my surgery.

I think each Dr has a different rexommendation and it also dpeends on you
& your situation. But, I am having LAP in 30 hours and my Dr has said
4 weeks nothing over 5 lbs...
I'd check with your Dr to be sure of his reccomendations! Good Luck! ~L~

Hello,
I had surgery in November and have a 2 year old. I was picking her up (per
my surgeon's ok), after two weeks! My hubby did the rest. I really missed
holding her, so he'd lay her on the sofa next to me, etc, so I could get a
nice cuddle. But after two weeks were up, I was back to normal - though
taking it very easy just in case!
FYI, she weighed 27 lbs. at the time.
Hope this helps,
Melinda

I was told at least 6 to 8 weeks. It depends on how fit you are before the
surgery. It is very important that you listen to your doctor. The outside
may be healed but it is the inside you have to worry about. To be fully
recovered it takes about 6 months. Yes, 6 months. I wanted to go to the
gym and start a weight program (very light weigths) and I was told to wait
6 weeks (had to get a doctor's note before they would train me). I was
already working out before the surgery and did not have a large stomach to
start with (weight 329 before surgery) all my weight was in the butt and
thigh area. Your stomach muscle wall may be very weak and you don't want to
strain your self and end up in the Hospital for more surgery. May sure you
are wearing your binder or girdle the hospital gave you. You may want to
purchase a Pressure Garment which helps hold everything in and stops any
swealing that may occur. Good Luck to you.
