I do have some advice for you about prenatal vitamins. Whatever vitamins
you take, make sure they are either chewable or gel coated, and don't take
them at night before bed. I recently got pregnant and was taking Vinate GT
prenatal vitamins. I requested those because they have a gel coating and
my sister took them post-op with no problem. BUT my pharmacy filled the
prescription with the generic brand which WAS NOT gel coated. I did not
realize what had happened until it was too late. I spent four days in the
hospital with an ulcer and sever gastritis. My surgeon said it had to have
been from the iron in the vitamins since I have been on Nexium since my
surgery. Also, I was taking them before bed, which my surgeon said was the
worst time to take them as they would just sit in my stomach a long time.
My sister got pregnant four months post-op and has only six weeks of her
pregnancy left. So far she and the baby both are fine. Don't worry, I am
sure you will be fine.

First, Congratulations! I can't answer any of your questions, but there is
a Yahoo! Group that is for pregnant women who have had WLS sugery (all
types). Here's the web address:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-pregnant/ There is some very
good help and information in this group. Good luck to you! Denise 316/157

Karen,
I am an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, so this question is right up my alley.
I recently read a very well written research article on this topic. It
suggested to do three things differently 1) Take your prenatal vit. in
addition to your regular one. 2)F. Femurate is a more bioavailable
form of Iron, if needed and 3)A standard Glucola test should not be done on
us b/c it may cause dumping, instead we should get a fasting and HgA1C.
Discuss these things with your provider. ~Keri

I am also post op and pregnant and have a hernia. I'm 14 weeks pregnant
and have seen the doctor 3 times. He has not even addressed the hernia. I
don't think that he has alot of knowledge in gastric bypass patients or if
he's ever even had one besides me. I'd love to talk to you and see how
things are going. email me anytime: [email protected]
