Question:
Can someone recommend a good protein bar?

I'm looking for some protein bar suggestions. What are you guys buying? Thanks!    — ellton (posted on January 2, 2004)

I find that the Detour and U-turn bars taste the best for me, and don't make me feel icky after I eat them. Trader Joe's often carries the smaller sizes, 15 Gr protein. The large bar is 30 gr.

I like the Detour, U-Turn, One Way, Joyride and the new Zanzibar bars from Next Proteins/Designer Whey...JR

I get Nitrotech (NOT Mesotech) protein bars from GNC. They're primarily whey protein. I was told to avoid soy protein, as I am on Synthroid, and soy protein binds with the Synthroid (or thryroid hormone in general) and can render it ineffective (or make a euthroid person hypothyroid). Anyway, I like the peanut butter and peanut butter chocolate chip. I have one a day - half for a mid morning snack, and half for a mid afternoon snack.

I like the Detour and the Joyride. Detour is like Snickers and the Joyride is like a Mounds. Sam's club sell the boxes of small size bars and you can order the larger ones on the web. I find the smaller bars are easier to consume. LAP RNY 8-28-02 down 120 lbs Best of Luck!

I like the Power Crunch bars they are not heavy like the Detour and have just a slight protein taste.

i like all the different Atkins bars. The u-turn and detour that everyone raves about has such a protein taste that I can't even stand the smell of them. My breath smells like crap after I eat one of those.

I do believe I've tried every single protein bar on the market (hehe) I HATE most of them (yes even atkins bars) I like FROZEN detour, don't like U-turn. BALANCE bars are awsome..and Carb solution are great too (I like the peanutbutter)

Here's a second vote for Zone Perfect Fudge Graham. It's yummy! Zone Perfect actually makes a few others that are great, too. Their yogurt ones weren't that great, though.

I just went out today and bought some of my favorites. The brand is MYOPLEX and I get them at GNC. They have everything from chocolate dipped strawberry to s'mores to blueberry, anyway there's a whole bunch to choose from. I get the ones with at least 28g of protein and no more than 3g of sugar. I've eaten alot of "nasty" protein bars and even one by ODDYSSEY (also from GNC) that I swear tasted like a candy bar. I recommend trying a variety of brands and flavors, then buying (in bulk to $ave) the ones you really like. There are some good ones out there, but beware & label read every time you buy. I made the mistake of just buying a PURE PROTEIN bar, and it had been reformulated and now had too much sugar! So, I gave them to my husband because I was too lazy to return them. Good Luck!!! I have tried many different protein bars and I personally like the Advant Edge protein bars fromw Wal-Mart. Now not all of them are good but the Cookies N Cream are great and the fudge Brownie. They have 25 grams of protein and very low on impact carbs. I started out just buying one bar of different kinds of protein bars to see which ones I liked.

I like the Think! Thin Bars. They have them at walmart and they are less than $2 a piece. I really like the lemon meringue. I have been trying lots of different bars too, even though I am pre-op. Walmart definitely has a great selection of low carb, high protein bars. Power crunch bars are awesome too. They taste like a little Debbie--Nutty bar. they have several different flavors, peanutbutter, chocolate, berry.

My vote goes to the Atkins bars. I keep them in the frig and that makes them nice and chewy. When I get ready to have one, I slice them in bite size pieces. Two of my favorites are the mocha bar and the pralines n cream. Oh, and cookies n cream is good. I eat half a bar at a time. Very satisfying and filling. (Open RNY 10/30/02 405/171/150)

Personally i can't stand most bars out there. I have tried almost every protein carb friendly bar that Wal-mart sells. I would buy 2-3 bars of different brands and flavors with each paycheck. I don't like that chewy slab of mud type. I did like the Zone Perfect Peanut Butter crunchy one though. Unfortuantley I found out I dump on peanut butter. Good Luck.

I am like Wabbit from Vermont in that I like FROZEN Detour bars, don't like the Uturn bars, like the Balance bars. I also like Zone bars but for the most part I really don't like many protein bars.

After trying about 20 different brands of protein bars, and finding them pretty gross, for the most part, I found a bar that's really great. It doesn't taste like cardboard, or have a nasty smell, or an aftertaste. It's the STRIVE Bar, by Bio-Chem. It comes in 3 flavors, S'Mores, Dark Chocolate Raspberry (my favorite), and Mixed Berry Crunch. It has 20g of whey/soy protein, only 3g net impact carbs, and has the texture of a Rice Krispies treat. The dark chocolate raspberry is excellent, just sweet enough, with a good raspberry flavor that mixes well with the dark chocolate. The retail price is $2.49 per bar and $29.88 for a box of 12, but you can get a box of 12 bars for just $20.00 from MyHealthPro.com. Also, Netrition.com has single bars for $2.29 each and boxes of 12 bars for $22.95. I liked this protein bar so much, I just bought 6 boxes of it. Since my doctor wants me to take in 80g of protein supplements per day, in addition to 80g of protein in regular food, I figured I'd try to find the best tasting protein supplements I could. I'm still searching for a good protein powder, so I'd appreciate any suggestions in that area.
