Question:
How will WLS & small food portions affect low blood sugars?
I hate the lows of diabetes, but then I don't have too many. How is this controlled with the small amounts of food that you get after wls? I am Type II also and currently on an insulin pump. — dwhit54 (posted on November 26, 2003)

Debbie,
I used to have horrible lows when I was pre-op and diabetic. It's a
horrible thing, isn't it? I hated that blood sugar around the 40 level
feeling! YUCK! Of course, they weren't much better than the high 200s and
low 300s I would start with each day, either!
You know, diabetes is not necessarily automatically "cured" with
all forms of WLS. It's really important to make sure you make the right
choice for you in regard to this. There is an article you can read about -
at this link:

It's very educational!
There is currently a study being done in Europe on the "switch"
portion of the BPD/DS for non-MO individuals - they are finding that it is
curing diabetes in 99% of the patients. How cool is that? My own surgeon
is doing this procedure as well, now, and so far, all of his post-ops are
cured of diabetes as well.
Please let me know if I can help at all, okay?
Blessings,
dina

I am at nearly 3 weeks out from surgery, and prior to surgery I kept my
type 2 diabetes in pretty strict control by med's, diet and exercise. The
day after surgery, I was given low doses of insulin and 3 days later was
off all insulin, and the day I left the hospital, my BS was 189, a week
later, with a continually descending rate, my BS is between 121-125 every
single morning. Granted, there is not a lot of food/calories going in right
now, but what I am suprised about is that it does not drop below those
numbers. A few months from now I may be able to post more info when more
and varied styles of food are being taken in, but I intend to maintain a
'diabetic lifestyle' food regieme of no sugar/low carb/nothing white diet
post op. No more meds so soon after surgery was a real boon. Hope it will
last!

I might recommend the Grad list for you to lurk. You can't post for a year,
but if you ask me, I'll post your question. Most of us were
"normal" for awhile, but then the LBS issues started to surface.
The type of surgery doesn't seem to matter so much. It's like it goes into
remission for a couple of years, then comes back. And maybe has to do with
the actual weight loss vs the method of loss. That isn't to say yours will
come back or your diabetes will return, just that you should leave your
options open. With no sugery of any kind, there will be no remission from
your diabetes. Here's the link:
