Question:
Need help with Post-op diet - not sure what I should be eating.
I just talked to one of my friends, who asked what I was doing for a diet and I said just cutting back and trying to get in all of my proteins. She said you better be careful because if you are eating alot of meat and cheese etc. and also getting in carbs you will gain weight. What should I do and what should I be eating at 12 weeks out. My Dr. gave me permission to eat everything, so no restrictions, just not sure what to do. Nutritionist was not clear either, never told me about eating protein either, that came from this site. 50% protein 30% carbs 20% fat is what my nutritionist told me.

Lisa, I looked at your profile, and it looks like you're doing fine. You
even are losing weight very quickly. I don't know if your friend is
"normal" or if they have had the surgery also, but I don't think
they really know too much about nutrition. Regardless of what some people
think about the best way to lose weight, your body need EVERY kind of
nutrient to function. That includes carbs. My dietician told me not to
worry about carbs, but just not to overdo. If you are eating your protein
first, you will be fine! Good luck to you. ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 -

If you are loosing, and happy with 'your' current diet and your labs come
back fine. . do what you have been doing. EVERY DOCTOR has their 'idea'..
some do 'atkins'; some the major food groups... The main thing is to get
your protein in... and DUH 60 grams is ONLY 10 more than NORMAL people
eat... find what works for you... I personally didnt get much info from my
nutritionist... she had no clue what someone that has wls was capable of
eating.

Cottage cheese, deli meat, steak, grilled chicken, raw veggies with ranch,
nuts and raisins, tuna with pita chips or whole wheat crackers, eggs,
shrimp cocktail, chilli, stews (pick out meat first)homemade quiches with
chicken or ham, casseroles (I pick out the meat)salads with chicken strips.

Not to pick on your friend or anything. But has she had the surgery? Is
she thin? Our diets are and forever will be different from everyone elses.
What generally will work for someone else may not work for you. And what
works for you most likely will not work for others. Me personally...I
just ate less and paid attention to protien and I did fine. But because of
the limited compacity of our stomachs we have to be careful we eat what we
need, and nothing else. IE...protiens first, then veggies, then carb.
Now, I say this as I sip my tea and eat a cinnamon roll. We are not
perfect, as long as we know the rules and follow them allmost all the time
(wink), we will be successful. Best of luck to you. Becky 10/01~265/135

My doctor believes in balanced diets, so like you, I'm not restricted on
any particular food group. But, I was also told to eat protein first, then
if you have room, veggies and carbs after.
