Question:
What in the world?????
Okay.....I hjave been taught about dumpping but this was scary. I had severe pains in my ribs, front and back, nausea, light headedness and dizziness. All the symptoms but the ribs and chest hurting I knew as dumping. I had a no sugar added fudgecicle before I went to bet. When I started hurting so bad I took some liquid loratab....that was wrong it got worse. I thought I was having a heart attack. It settled down enough for me to finally sleep a little after a couple hours. Now the question :) Whats that all about? Has anybody else experienced this to this extreme? What can you do besides ride out the storm......or prevent it/ I literally thought I was in BIG trouble. All post will be greatly appreciated. God Bless, Mary~ — mrysmth1 (posted on November 8, 2003)

Sounds like severe dumping to me. The only time I have come close to
dumping was on sugar free ice cream, yet I tolerate no sugar added ice
cream bars fine. It might be that there was too much sugar or sugar
alcohols in the fudgecicle. Even no sugar addeds have some in them. I'm
assuming for me and the ice cream that it was either lactose intolerance,
too much fat or what it was sweetened with that my body did not like. It
wasn't full blown dumping but I did not feel as good for a few hours.
<p>You don't say how far out you are. It might be too early for even
small amounts of sugar. Some can never eat sugar. I do okay as long as
it's around 8 grams of less. If I eat more than that then I do not feel
good for a while, but do not get real sick. If what you had, had Splenda
in it then next time try one made with Nutrasweet or vice versa. It could
totally be the sweetner that caused the problem. If you are early post-op
then put them away for a few months and try again. However, it is easy to
get in a rut of eating one a day if you tolerate them. My only solution to
that is to leave them in the store otherwise I eat one whether I truly
wanted it or not. Old habits die hard! Good Luck!

Those same symptoms have happened to me. Each time it happened when I had
eaten something out (either catered or in a restaurant) that I thought
would be OK, but obviously there was stuff in there I didn't know about.
It feels horrible, but it's not dangerous.

It surely wont hurt to talk to your Doctor. I have had the same thing
happen to me a few times and I almost went to the Hospital each time, but
after suffering for a half hour or so it goes away. I actually think it's
built up gas along with dumping and a drink of antiacid helps me alot. I'm
trying to avoid that pain, it hurts soooo bad :o) good luck!

Mary,
I am 4 months post op and can honestly say I have never had a dumping
experience. I have not eaten anything with high amounts of sugar but I do
eat sugar free things or no sugar added. I guess I am fortunate but I had
my gallbladder taken out in 1975 and the attacks I had before it was
removed were just like you described. The pain and even the nausea and
dizziness. I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. It was
terrible so I sympathize with you. I would mentioned it to your doctor and
I pray you do not have another one. Good Luck and God Bless

I developed gallstones within months of my WLS and the attack was just like
what you described. If your gallbladder hasn't been removed, I would talk
to my surgeon about it. I had one weekend where I had 6 attacks and it
was awful. With one of them I was sure I was dying. It is without a
doubt the worst pain I have ever experienced.
