Question:
Please help......
Hello all you awesome people, I am about to embark on 3 more surgeries by the first of the year. I had the lap RNY on the 8th of October. Two of the surgeries are on my knees a few weeks apart and then the other is on my left arm...... My question is......Will being sendentery while on the mend for the next two months stop or drastically reduce my weight lose? This is driving me nuts to think It is going to slow me down at all....but hey I have to do this. So what do you guys think???? Is it gonna mess me up too bad???? God, I hope not!!! Are there any suggestions??? God Bless, Mary~ — mrysmth1 (posted on November 7, 2003)

I was partially confined to a wheelchair when I had my sugery. I was
sedentary for the first 3 months post op and I still lost weight. Depending
on your knee surgery, your orthopedist may not want you sedentary. My legs
and knees ahv been operated on 5 times so I could walk again. With the
excpetion of rebuilding my right ankle, they MADE me get up and start
walking after each of the 4 other surgeries. Evene after my ankle they had
me getting around after 2 weeks. Good luck!!

The first six months or so, you continue to lose with or without exercise,
though probably more so with exercise, so I wouldn't worry about it. Take
care of yourself, heal, and when your ready get back into exercise...

At about five months post-op, I had to quit exercising for about a month
due to a medical procedure. I quit losing altogether and plateaued during
that time, but at least I didn't gain. Once the procedure was over with
and I was able to resume exercise again, the weight loss started up again.
I know it drives you nuts thinking that you're losing part of your
"honeymoon" period to other medical procedures, but like you
said, you gotta do what you gotta do. On another occasion, I had a surgery
that knocked ten more pounds off of me *after* I reached goal (even though
I wasn't able to exercise for awhile because of that). So, you never know
how these things will go. As long as you pick up where you left off once
you're cleared to do so, any slowdown won't be a big deal, in the long run.
Good luck with your surgeries.

I'm just curious--why are you having knee surgery now, instead of waiting
until you take some weight off? I've been having trouble with both my knees
for some time now, and my doc's already said that I'll need at least one of
them replaced. But he strongly advised me to wait until I took off some
major pounds before scheduling knee surgery, since he said the less I
weighed, the easier it would be for me to get back on my feet and the more
readily my knees would heal.

What worries me here are your protein & iron levels. It's hard enough
on us to do the WLS, but with compromised absorption, you may not have
enough "fuel" on board to heal well. Are you pre-loading for
these surgeries? Gotta have "glue" to heal.
