Question:
I'm having a really tough time getting in protein...

I feel really sick when i drink it, i'm gagging it down. My weight loss has slowed down. I started out with CIB sugar free, and then switched to Whey protein, and i just feel like i could vomit. I hate the smell, i blended it, added ice, Is the a flavorless protein at all? I need to find out how i can get in my protein, without having all different kinds laying around. i'm only 18 days post-op, any suggestions would be great!!! thanks. :)    — Lynne W. GNC makes a tastless protien powder. You can put in to your favorite drink and it does not alter the taste. It is made by GNC

Hi Lynn..www.unjury.com...I mix the chocolate flavor with skim milk and it tastes to me like Nestles Quik. They have an unflavored powder and a vanilla flavor that you can mix with sugarfree Tang and it tastes like a cream scicle. You can read about it and order at their site. Good Luck

Lynne, even at 18 days post-op, you do not need to get all your protein in via shakes (unless your surgeon has you on a strict liquid program). At 18 days out, I was getting plenty of protein from cottage cheese (1/2c = 13g!), yogurt (goes down very easy) and refried beans (a great different taste). If you're unclear about what you can have, speak with your surgeon and nutritionist.

My first few weeks I lived on "double protein" milk. You take powdered milk, and mix it according to the package directions, but substitute skim milk for water. You get double the protein of regular milk. Be cautious the first few times and drink slowly. Some people dump from the lactose, and others become lactose intolerant after surgery. I never took to the protein shakes, either. I eventually found the Very Cherry Berry Nectar brand protein supplement to be good, if I mix it with any red s/f drink, such as raspberry Crystal Light, instead of water (though at just a few weeks out, that might have tasted too sweet). I also like Rocomojo, which is a roasted soy bean drink (13 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber per cup). You make it like coffee, but it doesn't really taste like coffee--just another in the hot drink family. The best price for Rocomojo on the Internet that I've found is through efoodpantry.com. I can also find it at Cost Plus World Market--perhaps other specialty stores carry it, too. Lap RNY 4/1/03 290/201/168

There is a brand called "ProCel" that's flavorless (though you can tell it's been added to food or drink by the consistency) -- you can also bake with it. But I recommend that you also order a range of protein powder samples in single-serving sizes from vitalady.com, so you can find a brand you like. It's not easy to find a good one, as many of them don't taste good, but having a good protein shake in your diet will be a big help along the way.

HI! GNC has a great return policy...If you buy something and don't like it you can return it with a receipt for a refund or to exchange it for something else. They don't advertise this too much but that is their policy. So you can try different protein powders and drinks without being out all of that money. Also, I drink Isopure Carb Free drinks, they have 40 grams of protein in them. They come in 20 ounce glass bottles and are $3.50 each at GNC. They come in 4 or 5 different flavors, there's glacier grape (tastes great), fruit punch (pretty good), orange (yummy), green apple (never tasted), there may be another flavor but I can't remember it right now. The best way to drink these drinks is to put them in the freezer and let them get nice and icy, they taste wonderful! They're a little thicker than water but really tasty. GOOD LUCK! ~LEANN~

You should check w/ your surgeon. Once I had my drain & staples out (Open RNY), my surgeon allowed me to drink skim milk (adding powdered milk to it for extra protein), smooth yogurt (Dannon LaCreme is great!), and scrambled egg chopped up really small and cottage cheese. Plus, give yourself a break....you are only 18 days post-op, you will progress and be able to take in other things as time goes on. I never used any of the protein shakes or CIB and I did just fine. I am 9 months post-op and am down 92#!

Go to this link and look around, they have some great tasting drink mixes, brothes, jellos and pudding with about 15 grams of protein per serving. They cost about $9 per box of 7. They are clear and have no aftertaste or unusual smell. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/cntr4weightloss/catalog.html

I had to try a bunch of different shakes before I found ones I could tolerate. I spent a fortune figuring it out. There are a few sites out there that you can order samples from. I started ordering recently from www.wlssupplies.com and have had a good experience with them. Hope this helps.
