Question:
is it possable to hit a plateau already???
This is so frustrating!! I had lap rny on 08/21, by 8/31 I had already lost 23 lbs (this is wonderful), however in the last 10 days I have not lost a pound, not one!!! I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?? i am following my diet plan from the nutrionist and getting all my water, is there anything else i can do?? thanks for the help!! — Jenni O. Well I had lap rny on 8/6/03 and I lost around the same amount of weight
that you did the first two weeks. I also have been stuck at the same
weight for the past three weeks. Everyone kept telling me that...
"this can happen..." although it is not much consolation. I am
trying to "stick to the plan" and wait it out. That is all we
can do anyway... protein, water and exercise. That is the plan! Are you
getting in all of your water? I am having trouble doing that... plus I
have a bad leg and it is like all the fluid is laying on that leg. There
isn't a diet plan on the planet that does not say get in all your water.
Are you getting enough protein? My doctor does not recommend protein
supplements... he wants us to eat all of our protein... but at this stage
of the game, that is kind of hard to do. I was thinking about using
supplements to boost my protein intake and hopefully BREAK this plateau.
Are you exercising? I am even having a hard time doing that... the BAD leg
again. I have been walking to work instead of driving and my leg hurt so
bad last night I am back to the car today. I hope my leg will get better
as the weight comes off. I have folks telling me at work that I am
starting to "look" different so maybe you are losing inches even
though that scale is stuck. Maybe we need to stay away from the scale and
our frustrations will go away a little. We have to hang in there! God
Bless you on your Journey!

It is very common to have a minor "plateau" in the first 5 weeks
at some point but it passes quickly and has no effect on future weight
loss. Try to get you protein up and get in all your fluids as soon as
possible. The sooner you can get up to speed the batter. It is a lot of
work in the beginning but you can do it. Good luck.

I believe that what you are experiencing is normal. I settled into a
pattern of loosing for two weeks and then loosing nothing for two weeks and
so on and so on after my first month. I still did well and I know you will
too! Just stick with the 'program' do everything you have been told to.
May I pass along my 'word of advice'? It is to keep off the scale so you
don't go on an emotional roller coaster. (I'm not saying that you're
weighing too much now- since you've said nothing about it- this is just an
observation and heartfelt advice) Commit to weighing on a regular basis,
perhaps once every two weeks or even once a week if you MUST but don't
drive your self crazy by weighing every day. You'll have so much more
peace of mind. Good luck to you. You're off to SUCH a GREAT start. I
have confidence that you're going to be a smashing success. Go for it!

I had surgery 3 weeks ago yesterday and am experiencing the same thing. At
first it upset me, then I just had to say to myself, "I am doing the
best I can do. It isn't like I can cut back anymore. THerefore if it is the
best I can do, it is out of my hands, and I have to trust that in the long
run it is going to work itself out." I know this is hard, but I keep
repeating it over and over, as well as my husband doing the same.I'm hoping
that since the loss is slower, maybe the hair loss or sagging skin won't be
as much of a problem.(Of course I'm probably spitting in the wind on that
one, but it sounds good!)Remember-Positive reinforcement. Positive
thinking.

Don't worry, it is nothing that you are doing or not doing. Your body lost
a lot of weight too fast, it is trying to reserve any fat left because it
thinks you are stranded on an island without food or ship in sight. Our
bodies were created to survive. Do what you are suppose to and sit back
and relax. Plateau's are almost always there at the beginning. I remember
wondering if I would ever lose weight again. I did. Now I am down 43 lbs.
and 43 inches just after 2 months. Stay off the scale for a week or two.
RELAX and congratulations. Your body will give in you'll see!

You can hit a plateau at any point. You can also hit a plateau on a regular
basis. I am 5 mos. post op and I plateau for 3 weeks each month and lose 1
week per month.

What gets me through is the fact that this extremely fast weight loss is
NOT normal. Remember all those diets we've tried? We would have been
thrilled to have lost 10 lbs. a MONTH! I'm only 3 weeks out, have lost 17
lbs and consider it a blessing that I'm actually ahead of the game compared
to those tortuous diets from before WLS that left me starving and
CONSTANTLY thinking about food. Hang in there!

While I have not had WLS surgery, I do believe that plateaus are a very
natural part of this whole process and some people will do so sooner than
others. I can only think that the MOST important thing for anyone who is
post-WLS to do is follow their doctor's instructions carefully and get in
the proper protein, fluids, and eventually you will see the weight begin to
move once again. To do less than what has been prescribed would seem to me
to be an invitation for trouble. Good luck to each of you who are post-WLS
and anxiously awaiting that new body size.
I am still in the deciding if WLS is right for me stage so I find your
trials, tribulations and victories to be very informative and helpful. I
have my first seminar tonight, but I never thought I would reach the point
where I would even consider attending a seminar so it is evident which
direction I am moving in.

I had open rny on 6/30/03 I lost 22lbs my 1st 2 weeks, then for 2 weeks I
did not lose a single ounce, oooohhh that was depressing but on my 3 rd
week I lost 4 lbs and have an average weekly loss of 4-5 lbs, this is
definately normal.
