Question:
I am wondering what the average weight gain is right after surgery.

Mt doctor said its possible to gain from all the fluid retention. What is the average and how long does it take for it to come back off. Thanks    — Brandi S. (posted on August 30, 2003)

I gained 10 lbs over the 4 day stay! I made them weight me twice right before I left the hospital. Nobody told me to expect that. Anyway - it was gone in a week.

I think I gained about 10 lbs in the hospital and it came right off about 3 days after I got home.

I gained 3 pounds when I weighed the day after surgery, and then the day after that, before I went home, I weighed again and had lost 2 of those 3 pounds!

Wow, you guys are lucky. I gained 16 lbs and that was after being in the hospital a total of 2 days. I couldn't believe it. But like everyone else says you lose that right away after you come home. I would say a matter of 2 or 3 days. Now my question is what do count as my weight and how much I lost. :-)

Hi, I was in the hospital for 5 days. The day I left the hospital I weighed 18 pounds more then surgery day. I didn't weigh again until my 2 week check up, then I had lost a total of 23 pounds. So, lost the 18+5 more. I imagine it will drop off quickly for you. Don't worry!

I wasn't weighed at discharge, so I don't know how much I gained, but due to excess fluid and swelling from surgery, I had to wear size 30/32 stretch shorts for the first week... I was in a 26 when I checked in.....but by 1 week post op, it all went away....good luck to you.

I didn't gain any weight. I was in the hospital for three days and I went to see my surgeon in his office 7 days after and I lost 22lbs. I started menstruating when i was in the hospital and because of the blood thinners they had me on, I lost alot of blood. They had to take me off the thinners after my third week, because I was still mensing. Instead of gaining fluids I was losing them. That may be why I lost so much instead of gaining that first week.

I gained 19 lbs in the 3 days I was in the hospital. By my 2 week checkup I had lost it plus 17 more.

Well, it looks like I've got the other posters beat! I gained 25 pounds in the hospital - all fluid. I was huge and puffy and felt like a giant water balloon. It took about a month for me to get rid of it all, but 22 pounds of fat went with it, so how could I complain? LOL However much you gain, just remember it's temporary. And you may not gain anything at all. :)

Think I gained about 15 pounds from all the fluids, and lost them all within a few days of being home. Don't worry. It all falls right back off, and then some ;)

30# for me! I affectionately called my legs my "tree trunks" or my "sausage legs after I came home from the hospital. I had to wear my slip on slipplers home from the hospital and for almost a full week afterwards.

In the first 18 hours I gained a total of 21 lbs. I weighed myself about 20 minutes before I went home. I had lost all but 9 lbs. of it. I was very lucky. I am now 3 1/2 weeks post-op and at my 2 week check up I had lost 23 lbs. So don't worry. It will all come of quickly. The nurses told me once they took my IV out the weight I gained in the hospital would pretty much just fall off of me. And it did. Best of luck!
