Question:
2 Weeks Post Op, Food Troubles, Advice Needed

I am two weeks post op, and feeling sick to my stomach at the site & thought of food. I have been bored w/ what I have been eating. I posted a question about it, and received a lot of support and reassurance. I hoping the same w/ this one. For the past few days I have feel a little more week than normal, and today the mere thought of a food makes me throw up. I mean I have not even eatten a single thing, and I am either throwing up. Or I feel like I am on the verge of throwing up. I called my doc and dietician. But no call back yet. Is this normal? Is something wrong w/ me? Is there something else I should try eating. Please help!!    — K D S. (posted on June 30, 2003)

Not eating can cause you to feel nauseated. Find a couple of foods you can tolerate (deep breathing between bites helps some to quell the queasies) and force yourself to eat. Of course if you toss everything you do manage to get down or experience pain, call your doc back!

What you're describing could also be dehydration, and you certainly need some food. Do your best to drink things with some nutrients, like broth or other soups, and drink as much as you can stand. I hope that helps you feel better.

Yes, you're normal. But you must force yourself a tablespoon an hour to eat little bits. Start with unsweented applesauce (applesauce cures neaseua)...my favorite was the individual containers of Granny Smith unsweetened. Then, as the others suggested, chicken broth. Make it yourself with one chicken leg and a little onion and carrot (one carrot and 1/2 onion and 3 cups water to 1 chicken leg should be fine). If you make it yourself, you'll want to eat it. The canned stuff is gross. Tablespoons or sips of water all day, too. You must hydrate or you'll end up in the hospital. Pretend you are YOUR baby and nurture yourself as you would your baby. Good luck. You'll do fine!

hey we had the same surgeon! Wow! Ok so I don't run across too many that do and this has nothing to do with your question. I was just tripping over it :>) If you don't get a call back from Bright's office...call again!

I am six weeks post op and the thought or sight of food makes me sick as well. I am so tired and weak from not eating and I just don't know what to do about it. So, I am forcing myself to take one small bite of something every hour. Hope that will work. Sorry I don't have a solution, I wanted you to know that you are not alone here!

If your not eating or drinking, then you are dehydrating and this will only add to your nausea and weakness. I know its tough, but find something you can tolerate and eat a few bites ever few hours. Find a protein drink (I found the Isopure zero carb koolaid type flavors-20 oz bottles with 40 grams of protein), cut it in half with water and sipped on it all day as an early post-op. Something else that soothed and tasted good was egg drop soup. If you continue to throw up everything, including liquids, contact the doc right away as it may be something more serious.

Hi. I will be 2 weeks out on Monday. Time does help. Pheneragan does too. I was sooooooooo nauseous until 2- 3 days ago, I wasn't eating or drinking either. It was like a miracle 2 days ago, I could eat 1-2 t. of oatmeal, and later drink TINY sips of water. Then 1-2 t. of yogurt, wait, and TINY sips of water. It just went away, and now, I SIP water all day, and eat VERY tiny amts. in between. Call your DR. for some Pheneragan, if it continues. Best of luck, Kathy
