Question:
OTHER CARBS??

On the box of Multi-Grain Cheerios they list Total Carbs as 24 and then lower on the nutrition panel under sugars it has OTHER CARBS: 15. What does this mean?? Is my total Carb intake 39???? Thanks! :-) — Pizofret (posted on May 3, 2003)

JMO, but 24 grams of carbs is a lot, assuming you are an RNY patient. I don't even eat 24 grams of carbs in a day. Most days 5-15 max. I'm 12-1/2 weeks out. Maybe you are a lot further out than I am. Just beware that carbs will end up slowing your weight loss down.

Just another point of view: I'm not alarmed by the fact this cereal has 24 grams of carbs (cereals are going to have a fair amount of carbs). As a post-op, I never limited my carbs to 20 grams a day -- instead, I just strived to keep my protein grams ahead of my carb grams. I reached goal in less than nine months (121 pounds "in remission"), so my personal experience was that a severe limit on carbs wasn't necessary, for me. For somebody else, I can't say.
Philosophically, I'm also not a fan of limiting carbs severely because I think the post-op weight loss period (whichs is but a small part of our hopefully long and healthy post-op lives!) isn't just for setting a land-speed record in losing weight as fast as we possibly can (it truly is fast enough, despite our impatience with incredible weight loss rates). It's also about re-learning eating habits from the beginning. If you wait to introduce a more reasonable amount of carbs until you are 75 percent through your weight loss, or at some other point well down the road from your surgery, those increased carbs will be allowed -- and hitting you -- just at a time when you also find you can eat a LOT more, when head hunger is more of a problem, and when your weight loss is destined to slow down a bit anyway.
You may or may not want to get a "hit" of this many carb grams (24) in one sitting. On the other hand, I take a big "hit" in carbs for my breakfast cereals because for me, they were the only thing that worked for me to address constipation (having tried lots of the pills, powders, etc. that address that). JMHO!

Original Poster here.... I just wanted to say that once again, people drift from the question with their "personal opinions" My question was... "Do the other carbs count as additional or are they already counted?" I dont mean to sound rude and I do appreciate input however, I did not ask if anyone thought it was too many carbs. I feel that on here people tend to get on a "soap box" and preach about how they feel others are doing things rather than sticking to a simple answer(unless otherwise requested) Thanks! :-)

Diane is right. The total carbs would be 24 per serving.
