Question:
I am currently crushing my One Source womans vitamins, Citrical and Vitamin C tabs..
As they are too huge to swallow. Today I could not keep them down so I have started looking for good liquid vitamins to take. I have looked at Life Force-Body Balance, Seasilver and Isotonix. None of the info I pull up on these so called vitamins do not list the vitamins and minerals in each dose. They all have testimonials on how wonderful each one is but I want numbers. And I would like a liquid vitamin I can tolerate. I have already spent enough money on the big horse pills I am currently crushing and suffering through. If anyone can help me with suggestions or even hard numbers on any of the liquid vitamins I listed I would be so grateful. Thanks! 4 weeks post op. 309/277/? — Missy W. (posted on April 29, 2003)

There is a new vitamin coming out this week called Bariatric Lifestyle
Complete Nutrition System by the same company that makes Real Meals. You
just need to take two chewables a day that taste good. And the cost is
only around $10 for a months supply. It should be available on their
website this weekend. www.protein-solution.com

I've been taking 2 flinstone complete chewables and 3 viactiv chocolate
chews a day. The flinstones give you 100% of just about everything except
calcium per one vitamin and I'm getting 150% of my calcium with the 3
chews. I take my b-12 sublingualy once a week.
I was crushing up my vitamins but too much trouble and tasted too nasty. I
gave mom 3 bottles of gnc vitamins, she was happy. =) BTW, I crush or chew
my vitamins because I heard you absorb like 4 times as much of them crushed
or chewed as you do if you just swallow a pill.
Oh and Sams sells a really huge jar of childrens chewables too that have
the same content as the Flinstones. Much cheaper and you get ALOT more.

Missy - I started out with the Flintstones chewables, but couldn't stand
the taste. Then I found Centrum Chewable - they are orange flavor and not
too bad - WalMart carries them - right beside the regular Centrum. You are
supposed to take one a day, but I take 2. Good luck - Margaret

I hate to take pills; I take 'one a day (or walmart) ESSENTIALS - be sure
to check that it says 'essentials' These a SMALL viatamins... smaller than
an M&M.
I also take Iron - VitronC Its very very small as well.
Vit C shouldnt be a problem; I got regular Vit C that are chewable... I
just suck on them until they are gone.

This is to macanudomiss - Viactiv chews are calcium carbonate and if you
have had an RNY, you are not getting the calcium that you think you are.
The part of the stomach that produces the stomach acid has been closed off
and the pouch produces little to no stomach acid. This acid is needed to
extract the calcium from the calcium carbonate. Before it is too late,
please change your calcium supplement to a Calcium Citrate form...JR

John - I asked my dr about calcium carbonate and he said that there are
just as many studies that prove we absorb it than there are that state we
do not. He has been doing this surgrey for over five years and has always
had his patients taking Tums for calcium without any problems.

Here's another vote for "Centrum Chewables" for your
multivitamin. And I use vitalady's calcium citrate capsules, which you
definitely won't want to use (yet) as they're huge, UNLESS you break 'em
open and mix the powder into your protein shake, apple sauce, yogurt, etc.
(which is what I did as a fresh postie).
As to the post about the
doctor who claimed that there are just as many studies showing
"we" absorb calcium carbonate as well as calcium citrate -- I'd
like to see one such study. Just *one*. Anybody got a link to one?
Anybody? Bueller??
I've seen a number of news articles and medical
abstracts posted here (and I've collected some myself) that suggest calcium
citrate is better absorbed by most "normal" people than calcium
carbonate. Can't say I've actually seen a study either way for
"us" (if we're talking RNY patients -- even then, you'd have to
be precise in your study regarding proximals, distals, and even how you
define those terms). I'd bet my hat (and I like my hat) that he doctor has
NEVER seen such a study (long-term or otherwise) on WLS patients. I've
been treated by a number of really fine doctors in the past year for
various things, but one thing I've learned is that, when I really press for
information that seems to be a topic of disagreement even among experts, I
often find that the doc is going by what some other doc told some other doc
who told some other doc. In other words, it's often the case they really
*don't* see or read such studies, but they think maybe some other guy has.
Or, worse yet, some pharmaceutical rep has said so (yikes). I really would
like to see a study on this calcium debate thing so we could all quit
arguing about it, but I'm annoyed when I see a doc claiming there are
studies (studies? PLURAL??) that I sincerely doubt even exist. Harrumph!
