Question:
Dosage of polysaccharide iron per day?
Just curious if anyone can help me out here. I have been working 7 days a week, 10-12 hours per day for the last 5 months, and I kind of let my iron intake slip during that period of time. Last blood work showed iron level of 16. Not sure which reading that is, but I know it should be between 35-135. So anyway, now that I know that working my tail off isn't the only reason I am tired, how much polysaccharide iron should I be taking every day to help boost my levels, while not over doing it? I purchased some from Vitalady, and found some at my local pharmacy to hold me over till I get my order. Both are 150mg elemental. Can anyone suggest a safe daily dosage for me to boost my iron levels back up? Much thanks, Greg — Greg P. (posted on April 18, 2003)

What'd the doc say? Did he speak in 325mg terms? If so, one of these (poly)
is equal to TWO of those 325's. (Iron salts vs elemental iron). Distals
(like me) start on 2 of them per day. With C, but not with caffeine or
dairy, other vites, minerals or meds. Alone together for about an hour.
These are ok taken with food, as long as it's not a piece of cheese or
something.

Thanks for the response. I actually have my bloodwork done through my PCP,
and then she faxes the results to my surgeon every 3 months. My PCP just
told me to start taking SlowFE or something, but I know the poly is better
for us in terms of absorbtion and getting the levels back up. She didn't
really specify a number of mg, though I'm sure I will hear from my surgeon
soon. I just wanted to go ahead and be proactive on this, since I know iron
is so terribly important. I also know you can over-do iron, so I wanted to
make sure I wasn't going to poison myself by takine 300mg of the poly per
day.
